ANIMAL SCIENCE 71 ANIMAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT (In the Agriculture Division) Principal Vocational Instructors: Rousek (Chairman), Bell, Hixson, Selkirk, W. E. Evans, Larsen, Pflueger Verdugo T he Animal Science Deparonent offers majors in agribusiness, animal husbandry, dairy husbandry, dairy ind.usrry, and poultry husbandry. T he agribusiness major with an option in :mimal science prepare.~ students for positions in areas such as agricuJrural sales, including veterinary supplies, feeds; appraising for insurance companies and banks; management, credit, accounting and orher office work; and general farming. T he f111imal lmsbf111dry major prepare.~ students for occupations in farming where beef cattle, sheep, swio·e and horse enterprises are an imporrant part of the industry. Many graduates in tbis deparrment are engaged in the livestock and farming business or in other agribusiness occupations. The depa.~;tment maintains purebred herds of Hereford, Shorthorn and Angus beef cattle; a purebred flock of Rambouillet, Corriedale, and Hampshire sheep; four breeds of swine- Berkshire, Hampshire. Yorhhire, aud Du.roc; and a complement of registered quarter horses. The dairy science major whh dniry busbrmd1·y opti.on trains stadents for comrnerciaJ dairy farming entcrpdses, dairy herd management, milk rcsring, fieldwork for breeding associ,~tions, dairy sanitation, and for oth r agribusiness occr~pations. The department maintains three breeds of pm·cbred dairy catclc-Hohrcins, Guernseys, and Jerseys. A Grade dairy barn, dry feed lors, bull barn, fitting and showi11g barn, and a cow and calf barn provide excellent fnci.lities fol' practical tra ining in dai.ry husbandry. The dairy scitmce mnjor witb dairy i11dustry option prepares students for jobs in dairy plnnt in processing mille, ice cr am, cheese, butter, and other dairy products. The college maintains its own processing plant for bottling milk and teaching rhe required course.~ in butter making, ice cream, chce~c, and dairy plant management. Dairy products an~ processed for rhc college cafeteria and retail snles store by students as a part of the practical training pr gram. The poultl'y busbandry major prepares students for occupations in commcrchtl egg prod\Jction, f.ryer operations, breeder flock managemenc, hatchery, processing, and sales positions with feed companie.~. Many graduates operate their ow.n turkey and poultrY farms. T he pouJtry plant includes a central hatchery with cold storage facilities for egg h:mdling, grading and candling; commercial egg production and pedigree pens; b~;ooding facilities for conventional rype houses along with sunshine brooders; inte rmediate growing bntteries and wire floor cage houses. Over 3,000 birds are maintained in the college flock.
