278 FRESNO STATE COLLEGE HISTORY DEPARTMENT (In the Social Science Division) Professors: vVoiley (Chairman), Nelsen, W. Smith Associate Professors: Canales, Cobb Assistant Professors: Beach, Bilderback, Bohnstedt, Comegys, Matthew Part-time: Bradshaw, Galway, Klassen, Sawyers A primary function of the History Department is to give students a libe1·al education in world and American civilization. It aims to bcing to them an understanding of modem society by reviewing the achievements of the past. Thus the department aims to prepare srudent·s to be enlightened citizens equipped with he broad culrural background essential to srudies io the fields of education, philosophy, litCl'ature, law, government, journalism, public service, and business; ~11 of which today demand a greater grasp of vital domestic and foreign problems. The department offCIS a major and a minor jn history for tlte bachelor of arts degree, a graduate program in history for the master of arts degree, and courses for use in teaching credential programs.
