Applica-tion forms may be obtained from the Divi-sion of Graduate Studies, Thomas Adminis-tration Building, Room 132 or from the Education Student Services Center, ED 151. Also, applicants must complete the Counsel-ing or Special Education Program application that can be obtained from the department office in ED 350 or the Education Student Services Center, ED 151. Applicants will receive written notifi-cation regarding admission status after review by program faculty. Applicants may be re-quired to attend a structured interview. Graduate Programs The Department of Counseling, Special Education, and Rehabilitation offers pro-grams leading to a Master of Science in Counseling with an option in counseling and student services; a Master of Science in Counseling with an option in marriage and family therapy; a Master of Science in Reha-bilitation Counseling; and a Master of Arts in Special Education. Candidates who qualify for a preliminary teaching credential with completion of a bachelor’s degree program may, with prior approval, use a master’s degree program to satisfy the fifth-year requirements for a clear teaching credential. Clinical Review A formal clinical review process serves as a prerequisite for advancement to candidacy along with the advancement to candidacy criteria outlined in the Division of Graduate Studies section in this catalog. During the semester that students are en-rolled in the COUN 208 practicum course, the Clinical Review Committee of program faculty convenes to evaluate students. The criteria for this evaluation are based on skills and qualities considered appropriate for en-try- level counselors. Students may be asked to leave the program if committee recom-mendations are not met. Students will not be allowed to advance to candidacy until they pass the clinical review. Master of Science in Counseling The Master of Science in Counseling is a professional degree program designed for persons who desire to practice in the field of counseling. The Master of Science includes two program options: (1) the Option in Marriage and Family Therapy and (2) the Option in Counseling and Student Services. Graduate Writing Requirement. In keep-ing with California State University, Fresno’s Graduate Writing Requirement (GWR), all students enrolled in the various M.S. in Counseling options and M.S. in Rehabilita-tion program must demonstrate competence in graduate-level writing prior to being ad-vanced to candidacy for a master’s degree. The Graduate Writing Requirement is de-signed to determine students’ ability to write clearly, logically, analytically, and knowl-edgeably. Students enrolled in the M.S. in Counseling options in Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling and Student Ser-vices will demonstrate writing proficiency as part of COUN 220. Students enrolled in the M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling will demonstrate writing proficiency as part of COUN 257 or 258. Should the student receive a passing grade in the course content but fail to demonstrate adequate writing competence, there is an appeals process. Please refer to the specific counseling program’s Student Handbook for additional information regarding the Graduate Writ-ing Requirement and appeals process. Option in Marriage and Family Therapy The Master of Science in Counseling is a 60- unit professional degree program designed for persons who desire to practice in the field of counseling. An option is available in marriage and family therapy. Persons com-pleting this degree may qualify to work in agencies, community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, marriage and fam-ily therapy, and related areas. Completion of the M.S. in Counseling with an option in marriage and family therapy fulfills the edu-cational requirements for the state of Cali-fornia Marriage and Family Therapist Li-cense. Students entering the program after January 2001 will be required to take a 2- unit course on psychopharmacology to qualify for MFT licensure in California. Students seeking licensure should contact the coordinator of counselor education for information regarding licensing. This de-gree program is designed to meet the re-quirements of Division 2, Chapter 13, Sec-tion 4980.37 of the California Business and Professions Code. Application Deadlines University Admission. University deadlines for graduate admission applications normally are set during the semester prior to antici-pated program enrollment. (Deadlines for fall and spring enrollment must be moni-tored.) The university may extend admis-sion deadlines if anticipated enrollment tar-gets are not met. For specific deadlines, applicants need to check with the Admis-sions Office, Joyal Administration Public Contact Window, or call (559) 278-2261. KSOEHD Admission.
