SPEECH COMMUNICATION I 399 SPEECH COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT Professors: Campbell, Taylor Associate Professors: Hennings (Chairman), Fulkerson, W. Henderson Assistant Professors: G. Anderson, Bloom, Bochin, Cagle, Diestel, Natharius, Quadro, Ullmann Lecturer: Cronkite Part-time: Hansen The Speech Communication department offers courses leading to a bachelor of arts degree with a major or minor in speech communication and master of arts degree in speech arts. The curriculum is designed to provide areas of concentration appropriate to prepare students for careers in teaching, communication professions, public service and administration, and industrial communication management. The departmental major and minor requirements include courses relating to rhetorical and communication theories. The department affords the student majoring in fields other than speech many courses which focus upon communication factors as they apply to any field of study. Students planning to pursue graduate work in speech communication should consult their advisers and the graduate schools of their choice regarding requirements for admission and should plan to use their electives within the major largely to satisfy such requirements. In addition to departmental programs, many courses are offered which fulfill general education requirements and which provide the knowledge and background necessary to enjoy and contribute to our free society. MAJOR AND MINOR Both the speech communication major and minor are offered with two options. Option I is designed to provide competencies in rhetoric and communication for students who intend to pursue study beyond the bachelor of arts degree, and who are preparing for careers in secondary teaching, communication professions, public service and administration and industrial communication management. Option II is primarily designed to provide competencies for students who desire an interdepartmental major in speech arts to fulfill the academic major requirements for an elementary education credential, and for students in child development, child psychology, communicative disorders, home economics, recreation, social welfare, and physical education.
