HISTORY I 319 a foreign language may substitute 15 upper division units in courses approved by the Department of History. Any student planning advanced study is advised also to meet the foreign language requirement of the school he plans to attend. HISTORY MINOR The following minor requirements are in addition to the general education requirement in social science. Students majoring in history must have their programs approved by departmental credential advisers. For information on the current credential program, cOJ:).~ult departmental advisers and the School of Education; see the sections on Public School Credentials. HONORS PROGRAM IN HISTORY The department offers a special program that permits superior students to graduate with honors in history. These honors will appear on the student's transcript. Admission to the program is limited to students having a CPA of 3.25 or better and who have completed 45 units. These limitations may be waived in exceptional cases. Graduation with honor-s in history requires 12 units of upper division honors work in the department as well as at least 3 units of all-college honors work. History honors are designed to be sufficiently flexible to allow students to be directly involved in planning their own programs. The 12 units may be selected from the following categories: Upper division honors seminars (3-9 units}; graduate seminar (up to 3 units) ; independent study (3--6 unit ) . Six units of lower division honors courses (Hist 1 H D, 2 H D, 11 H D, 12 H D) may be substituted for 3 units of upper division honors seminars. At least 3 units of work in an upper division honor seminar as well as a minimum of 3 units of independent study, are required of all students in tbe program. Students who wish to take advantage of lliis program should consult the departmental honors adviser in order to provide for their special interests and abilities. Application forms for admission to the program are available in the effice of the department. MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE The graduate program for the master of arts degree in history is based on the equivalent of the undergraduate major at Fresno State. For specific requirements, consult the chairman of the department; for general requirements, see School of CradU11te Studies. For detailed information about the graduate program at Fresno State, see the Graduate Bulletin, available in the Office of the School of Graduate Studies. Foreign Language Requirement Advancement to candidacy for the muster of arts degree with a major in history requires the passing of an examination demonstrating the ability to read mater ials of the major in one appropriate foreign language.
