68 I SPECIAL PROGRAMS HONORS SEMINARS (Honor) Honors seminar courses (the Honor 170 series) are designed to explore the interdisciplinary aspects of general topics which are selected each semester by the Honors Committee. Specillo topics will be listed in the Schedule of Courses. They will be offered for 1 or 2 lmits of credit for a maximum total of 3 units. Honors seminars will meet requirements of general education, Area V. DEPARTMENTAL HONORS PROGRAM Programs in participating departments will become available in the 1971-72 academic year and will consist of 12 units of special work replacing a portion of the major requirements. This work will emphasize the student's independent pursuit of knoWledge and a working association with a faculty member of the department. Special seminars or sections of existing courses may be used to augment independent work. Admission will be based upon an evaluation of the student's ability to undertake independent and advanced work. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS The co!Jege offers two programs under this beading. A campu program is intended for students who are admitted to the college from foreign countries but who had their education in some other language than English. The California State University and Colleges offer an overseas program which provides an opportunity for American students to study abroad. CAMPUS PROGRAM The International Progriun (Campus) provides courses intended to help the foreign student whose previous instruction has been in a language other than English gain adequate skill in the use of the English language and sufficient familiarity with American customs and tradition to obtain maximum benefit from his experience at an American college. The following program is required of all entering foreign students, unless excused from part or all of it by the Admissions Committee on the advice of the persons concerned with the instruction and administration of the program. This decision will be based on a consideration of test scores and other data supplied by the student with his application. (See Admission to the College-Entrance E;mminations). After arrival at the college, examinations and an interview may lead to the student's being excused from certain courses. First Semester Program: Most student will he required to enroll in I S C 10, 21, and 93 in the first semester of residence. In addition, students with less skill in English will be required to take I S C 1 and 2. With permission of his adviser, a student may enroll in other regular courses. Other Undergraduate Courses: Two other English language courses, 1 S C UO and 121, will be taken during the second semester of residence unless the fore.ign student is advised that they are unnecessary for him. During his last year in college he 'will enroll in I S C 195. Courses Taken in Graduate Standing: An entering graduate student whose previous education has been in a language other than English is held to the same standards of English proficiency as are undergraduate students and may be required to enroll in the above-listed undergraduate courses when considered necessary by his advisers. Graduate tudents may elect to take I S C l93, but wlll be required to enroll in I S C 293 and 295. COURSES (I 5 C) 1. Oral Engllah: Pronunc.lotlon (2) Prerequisite: permission of instructor. The sound patterns of American English. Sound contrasts and stress, rhythm and intonation drills. 2. Engliah Sentence PaHerna (2) Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Practice in the use of intermediate and advanced grammatical p~tteros. Reading comprehension and vocabulary building. tO. Engllah Composition for foreign Student• (3) Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Study and practice of complex sentence types, including embedding, permutation, expansion, etc. Vocabulary development; critical reading; paragraph and essay composition. 303 125235
