312 FRESNO STATE COLLEGE CREDENTIAL PROGRAM For information on the current credential program consult departmental advisers and the School of Education; see the section on Public School Credentials. GENERAL EDUCAnON REQUIREMENTS The following courses will satisfy general education requirements. Area ll: Jour 182, 184. Area V: Jour 'I, 2, I7, II3, I85, I86. (See General Education-Courses) 1. Moss Communications (3) Courses JOURNALISM (Jour) Survey of the mass media of communication, including newspapers, magazines, radio and television; related agencies and fields of communicative enterprise, such as press associations, feature syndicates, advertising, and public relations. 2. Interpreting Current Events (2) Analysis, from the reader's point of view, of current information in news media; what constitutes news, breadth and depth of news coverage of various media. reliability of sources, influence of policy, methods of emphasis, objectivity and coloration. 8. Reporting (3) Prerequisite: Engl I, sophomore standing. Preparation of varied stories used by newspapers; analysis of news sources; techniques of interviewing; problellls encountered by reporters; ethical and legal considerations; coverage of some campus and community functions. (2 lecture, 2 lab hours) 17. Introductory and Publication·s Photography (3) (Former Jour 17A) Not open to students with credit in Art 101. Survey and instruction in beginning publications photography; use of camera equipment for black-and-white pictures; pictures taken and films and prints processed in laboratory sessions. (2 lecture, 3 lab hours) 106. Industrial Journalism i2) Survey and analysis of internal .and external publications produced by business and industry. 109. Contemporary Problems of the Amerin~n Press (3) Prerequisite: Jour 8 or permission of instructor. Advanced reporting problems; news policies and ethics; specialized reporting. 110. Advanced Reporting (3; max total 6) Prerequisite: Jour · 8. Practice in handling advanced news wntmg and reporting assigmnents in the environment of a new -room. Journalism Department newspaper used for laboratory purposes. (12 hours arranged) 112. School Public Relations (3) (Same as AS 112) Organization and analysis of a public relations program for elementary and secondary schools. 113. Public Relations (3) Role of public relations in business and industry, education, and other fields; public relations programs and problems. 114. Editing of Publications (3) Prerequisite: Jour , 8. Editing copy; writing headlines; using type effectively; handling telegraph copy; making up newspapers, lab use of department newspaper. (2 lecture, 2 lab, 3 hours arranged)
