Postharvest Physiology. Provides an education to prepare students for research work in the area of handling fresh fruits and vegetables for domestic as well as foreign markets. Soil and Water Science. Provides an education in physical and biological sciences applied to soil-water-plant relationships designed for the student interested in farm management, irrigation system design, employment as fertilizer or sprinkler equipment salesman; preparation for governmental and industrial research, irrigation district management and planning, and graduate study. Programs of Study: The Department of Plant Science provides competent advisers for students pursuing career objectives in, but not limited to, the following areas: Career Objective Research agronomy Farming: field crops, vegetable crops Fruit production, citrus farming Vineyard management Ornamental horticulture: landscape design, nursery management, turf management Viticulture Pomology: production, research Diversified farming Vegetable processing: frozen, fresh Irrigation Soil science Agricultural sales: plant nutrients, weedicides, insecticides, fertilizers Plant pathology Agricultural entomology Range or pasture management Rese·arch and development: plant by-products, mechanization, plant breeding Suggested Major Agricultural science Agricultural science Agricultural science Agricultural business Agricultural science or agricul-tural business Agricultural science Agricultural science Agricultural education Agricultural science or agricul-tural business Agricultural science Agricultural science Agricultural business Agricultural science Agricultural science Agricultural science Agricultural science Plnnt Science Laboratory Units: Theoretical instruction in plant sciences is enhanced tlrrough practical application at the various lahorntory units. Orchard Laboratory: A 65-acre orchard is maintained as an instructional tool where students may practice all skills from lond preparation through planting trees, harvesting, and marlccting. A species block is maintained ns well as larger plnnrinb'S o.f citrus, peaches, plums, nectarines, nlmonds, and apricots. Vi11cyard Laboratm·'j•: iticulru.re facilities include a 160-acre vineyard field practice and research blwrntory, raisin processing, dehydmcion and controlled rai sin storage lal.lor·ntor>'· Post-Harvest Laboratory: Cold storage, freezing, and assembly-line facilities are available for packing fresh fruit for marketing. Seed Processing Laboratory: The facility gives -the students added understanding of the methods and problems involved in cleaning and processing seed for planting. Ornamental Horticulture Laboratory: A large head house, lath house, and several environmentally controlled glass houses provide facilities for practice in nursery management and development of scientific gardening practices.
