38 FRESNO STATE COLLEGE obtained from the Fresno State College Alumni Association Office on the campus. Loans granted from these Joan funds may be repaid after graduation. National Defense Student Loan Program Fresno State CQllege participates in rhe federal loan program which is provided for in T itle II of the National Defense Education Act of 1958. Under this program needy undergraduate students in any field of study may borrow up to $1,000 a year, for a maxjmum of $5,000, and needy graduate students may borrow up ro $2,500 per year, for a combined maximum of $10,000. Students carrying at least a one-half academic workload are eligible to receive loans. Students entering college for the first time as well as continuing students arc eligible to apply for this type of loan. No interest is charged until nine months after t11e borrower ceases to be at least a one-half time studenr. Interest at the rate of 3% of the remaining b:tlance begins at the end of the nine-month grace period and the first payment is due three momhs later. Paymer:tts may e>..'1:cnd for a period of not more than ten years, but will be at a rate of not less than $15 per month. Law Enforcement Assistance Loans and Grants Srudems working toward a degree in Jaw enforcement or who are actively engaged in law enforcement a11d wish to return for further trruning, may apply for a Law Enforcement Assistance Loan of up to $1800 a year. Loans will be made on a basis of financial need. A loan rccipienc may have 25% of the loan cancelled up to 100% of the loan .for each year of full-time employment by a public, local, stare, or federal Jaw enforcment agency. Applications should be made to the Financial Aids Office by March 1st. Grams of up to $300 a semester may be made to assist full-tinlc or pan-tinle students in a graduate or undergraduate program who arc employees of any publicly funded law enforcement agency and who are in college for professional improvement. Applications should be made ro the Financial Aids Office by March 1st. Nursing Student Loans and Scholarships Under this program, a student who can show that a Joan is needed to enter or continue in the nursing program may borrow up to $1500 an academic year or its equivalent, with ;m aggregate maximum of $6000. Preference will be given to licensed practical nurses in selecting loan recipients. No interest i charged for periods up co 5 yens while the borrower pursues a full-rime course of scudy in a collegiate school of nursi ng lcadiT)g to a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing, I)! is otherwise pur~,1ing advanced professional rrniniog in nursing, or for a period of 9 mon.ths after leaving school. Interest then starts· at 3% simple interest and the loan is repaid ;tt not less rhan $15 per moncb. A borrower who enters fulltime professional nursing may have up to SO% of the loan canceHed at the rate of 10% for each year of full-time nursing or up tO 100% at the ,rate of IS% for each year of full-time service by the borrower a a professional nurse in a public or other nonprofit hospital in an nrca determined, in accordru1ce with regulations of t he Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, to have a substantial shortage of such nurses at such hospitals.
