October 12,1994 SPORTS CAUFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY. FRESNO Page 7 INSIGHT PLAYER PROFILE Jabari Lawrence INSIGHT With the Bulldog soccer team set to take a lunge at a national championship this season, the fate of the team's hopes rest on the likely shoulders of goalkeeper David Kramer. "If we're going to do anything this year, Dave is going to have to come up big for us," said soccer head coach John Blucm. 'To reach our goal, we'll first have to win the league, then advance to the Final Four and - foremost - stay healthy." Kramer, on the other hand, said there's less pressure on him to perform well this season as opposed to last season. This team, he said, doesn't have one star who's forced to take it upon himself to carry the rest of the team. "If I don't have a great game, il isn't the end of the world," Kramer said. "We're so deep thai there's always someone to pick up the slack." But what Kramer can't deny is his burning desire to end his senior year at CSUF with a bang, which equates to a Final Four appearance or possibly a national championship. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 23 in the 1994 ISAA preseason poll. Behind Kramer's three shutouts in four games and a ten-game winning streak, CSUF is now ranked No. 5 nationally. The 10- 1-1 Bulldogs lied for the team's best first 10-game mark in the history of the competition. As for Kramer, the accolades continue to mount. He came into the season with 21 career shutouts, and has since surpassed Kirk Shermer (22, 1978-81) for Fresno State's No. 2 spot. In the NCAA Division I soccer individual leader stats released Oct. 3, Kramer was nationally ranked for the second straight time this season at No. 7 in goals against average (0.56). He boasts a career GAA 0.88. Pending the conclusion of this season, Kramer, 22, is bent on playing professional soccer. He said a great season, which has already been achieved, would gain him clout as he seeks a position on a pro team. "I'm still waiting to find out whether the"Pro League will open up in America in May, but I'd re- David Kramer ally like to play in that," Kramer said. "If that doesn't work out, I'm thinking about playing somewhere in Europe. In soccer, it's tough, because teams don't really give offers. It's up lo you to contact them, try out and hope they give you an opportunity. But I won't sit around and wait for anything," he said. From seeing Kramer in action, San Francisco Dons coach Stephen Negocsco said he sees a professional in Kramer already. "He's a fine goalkeeper. I know a lot of coaches are bothered by his toughness [in goal.] He has all the tools." Negocsco said. Kramer said he owes his 9-1-1 season record to his composure on the field. As a goalkeeper, he said, you only gel a few shots to make an impact ihroughout the course of a game. Each time he's out there, he makes it a point to make sure nothing gels by him. "Dave has got great shot-blocking ability, and he deals well with crosses. He's really a good commander and leader for the defense," Bluem said. "Right now, he's playing with a lot of confidence. If a goalkeeper has confidence, the team has confidence. If he doesn't take a lot of risks - and he doesn't - then you keep the other team on its heels. He's stable, conservative and isn't flashy or showboaty," Blucm said. Last season in post-season play against Cal State Fullerton, the Titans scored four goals against Kramer en route to a shutout win against the Bulldogs. This season Kramer returned Ihe favor by shutting the Titans out 3-0. Kramer's greatest moment was a win against a defending national champion UCLA team during his freshman year. Just as the Swami expected, Denver was able to pull out a divisional road win in Seattle. The Dolphins lost a chance to take command of the AFC East with a loss to Buffalo while the Chargers completed a clean sweep of the AFC West with their win over the Chiefs. San Diego now holds a two-game lead in the West and remains the NFL's only unbeaten team at 5-0. In the NFC, the Cowboys and ^SKsSJ/Kmght **&<* both won in preparation for this week's face-off at Texas Stadium. The Bulldogs arc not so fortunate heading into this weekend as they no longer have a winning streak and have dropped one notch in the rankings. The Bulldogs' trip started off well in Corvallis when Fresno Stale faced an Oregon Stale team with a record of 8-1-1. Steve Patterson and Mark Foster both scored in overtime and gave Fresno State a 2-0 victory. The win gave the Bulldogs their tenth straight win and improved their record to 10-1. Sunday, Fresno State put their winning streak on the line against a less than formidable opponent in the Washington Huskies, who came into the game with a record of 3-6-2. Ending in a I-1 tie, the game broke the Bulldogs' 10 game winning streak but did leave them with a streak of 11 games without a loss. Fresno State can extend the streak beginning Thursday when they face Cal State Sacramento at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. The Fresno State volleyball team traveled to San Diego last weekend, ending their trip with a win and a record. The Bulldogs easily handled William & Mary in a three-set match winning 15-1, 15-12. 15-8. In that game, Brenda Gregersen recorded 33 assists and passed Traci Sliester to become Fresno State's leader for career assists. Fresno State will face Wyoming on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Colorado State on Sunday at 1 p.m. THE HOUSE IN PAIN: Cleveland (4-1) at Houston (1-4). The statistics for this one are deceiving. Houston is ranked higher than Cleveland in both offense (8th in AFC) and defense (1st in AFC), but the Browns have given up the fewest points in the AFC (12 per game).
