mmmm. *S**^^^~^*-^^ Dash for the green St Patrick's Day run benefits American Lung Assoc. Bv Linda Beltran StaffWriter On your mark, get set, dash. The St. Paddy's Day Dash, hosted by the American Lung Association, is an event for everyone from the running fanatic to the casual jogger. Sponsored by ValuQire, The Dash," set for March 14, will offer a IK ldd's run for children nine and younger, a 2-mile run and walkabout and a 10K run. This is for such a good cause," said Bob Schumacher, the executive director of the Fresno American Lung Associa tion office. The money we receive from the entry fees will enhance our summer camping programs for asthmatic children." The race, which will begin at the Chamlian Stables on Van Ness Extension just south of the Bluffs, will offer the runners the opportunity to view the beau tiful scenery. Racedirector, KenTakeuchi, said that this race will be both unique and important. This race is a part of the 15-Race Bud Lite Series and it is unique because it is always held on the weekend of St. Patrick's Day." The importance of this race is also significant to the American Lung Assoda- tion, according to spokesperson, Brenda Thomas. Since the ALA is prinripally funded by fund raisers and donations the amount of money that "The Dash" entry fees brings in is vital. This is the only fund raiser we have in the spring Thomas said. "Basically, the more entries we get the better off we will be for the rest of the year and for the summer camps." Still, Schumacher said that the ALA's goal for this and every event they stage is far more health motivated. This event, like with all others, serves to help us provide more public awareness and encourage people to make a difference in the air they breathe," said Schumacher. David Castellano, an avid runner who has participated in this and other 10K races, said what he enjoyed most about The Dash" is the spirit that some racers display. "It'sgreat to get out there and see teams in all-green outfits, " Castellano said, "I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate St Patrick's Day than to run a 10K and do it wearing all green." For those runners who do choose to sport the traditional green running ensambles, prizes will be awarded for the most creative St.Paddy's Day running attire and most creative attire for a "caterpillar team." Each caterpillar team can ha ve no more than six people per team for the 2 mile run and walkabout. Race day registration begins at 6:15 a.m. and the cost is $15 for the 2-mile and 10K route or $10 for the 1K-Kids run.
