AFAA 488-0748 SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH Fitness lovers, or those concerned about their weight, may find it hard to be jolly during the holiday season when "just one bite" can become a bulge. From Thanksgiving to the Super Bowl, everyone seems determined to break through the wall of strong dietary resolve by tempting you with an array of high-fat goodies. For the weight watcher trying to be good during this time, cookies, candy, nuts and chips are carted to the workplace, daily party invitations flood the mail and multi-course holiday feasts with the family can make you wish you were an orphan; especially when just one piece of mom's pecan pie has a tendency to make your stomach and behind explode in uncontrollable growth. Feel bad about putting on a few holiday pounds? The average American tends to gain up to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. That's probably the reason a top New Year's resolution is to lose weight. So you can go out and drop some money on a bigger shirt or pair of jeans this holiday season or plan on making your holiday more healthy, and start your new year on a lighter note. The best weapon against weight gain is self-control, exercise and calorie balancing. Feeling guilty about saying "no" to Aunt Pauline's famous holiday dinner? If a host persists in trying to make you eat, you can offer to sample everything instead of pigging out. One bite as a treat goes a long way and you won't feel like you're depriving yourself. It's also a good idea to eat something healthy before you go to a holiday party so you won't be tempted to, indulge later. Know your calories. Put high fat food items into a "treat" category. Fattening foods such as nuts should be avoided. Making a decision not to eat certain foods ahead ol time can give you the proper mind-set to resist temptation. It's difficult during the holiday season to keep from eating thou- sandaiof calories at one meal setting, but if you set a calorie goal for yourself, you can win the battle by effectively maintaining your weight. If you attend a holiday party, make an effort to meet new people. You can't talk to someone with your mouth full. Notice how overweight people pounce on the buffet table and watch over the dessert tray like a hawk. Prepare big pots of hearty homemade soup so you can eat several bowls during the day. Soup is not only a nutritional bonus, it also serves as an appetite depressant so you'll find yourself satisfied before you jump into the main course. It is important to take control of your eating habits during the holiday season. This year, accept the holidays as a time of challenge. Enjoy this special time and don't stress out if you lapse a little and gain a few pounds. This is just more reason to work harder after the celebrating is over.
