Sports FEBRUARY 15, 1995 Just another great week in Bulldogs sports •f Baseball, softball and men's basketball teams all have successful weekends I^ast week was an exciting one if you're a Bulldogs sports fanatic. Bennett's boys took two of three from the No. I team in the nation; Margie Wright's softball team annihilated the competition in San Jose; and Ihc men's hoops team was at home against San Diego State, which was predictably a laugher. Track and field, men's tennis and wrestling all maintained their positions in the top 25 and a CSUF assistant coach finally got her . big break. All in a week's work for one of the nation's most underrated sports powerhouses. Baseball- Despite a ninth-inning rally that fell short Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs have won six of their first seven games, including three against Cal-Bcr- kclcy and two at No 1 Stanford. And that's without the meat of its starting lineup Projected 3-4-5 hitters Quentin Barnes, Joseph Freitas and Larry Barnes haven't played a game yet because ..t injuri .-red. Big names don't headline this starting lineup. Inn three D's: depth, defense and determination, are what has fueled the explosive start. Reluming starters Ryan Wood, Ben Rcynoso and James Borgcs have played huge; that's expected. The stellar play <>l new starters Josh Kaitfors, Matl Curtis. Jim Fisher and Pete Hcnncckc has been a little more surprising Throw in the contributions from newcomers Derek Feramisco, Giuseppe Chiaramonte and Jeremy Senior guard Davon Satterwhite drives by Hawaii's Phil Handy Thursday in the midst of a Fresno State 23-0 run.The Bulldogs « See BASEBALL, page 7 the road, and then beat San Diego State Saturday 66-58. by Kori Rianda/lnslght two-game skid on DeLiddo's 200th win marks huge turnaround ♦ Wrestling coach Dennis DeLiddo recently got his 200th coaching win at Fresno State. By Robbie Miner Sports Editor Coaching milestones arc nothing new at Fresno State. Last season Bob Bennett won his I.OOOih game as the baseball team's skipper; Gary Colson claimed win No. 500 to cap off the 1990-91 season; and Margie Wright should win her 500th this year shortly before NCAA tournament time. The most remarkable milestone, though, may be the one established Jan. 28 by wrestling coach Dennis DeLiddo at Boise State. Even though DeLiddo will tell you win No. 200 "means absolutely nothing," the wres tling program's history begs to differ. In 1982, the former Bulldogs wrestler took over the helm of a dying program that had finished 5-13 the year before and had failed lo produce even one winning record in over a decade. The highest the team ever finished in the national polls was 68 in 1968 when Mike Gallcgo dominated the mat in the 167-pound weight class. This year. Gallego (No. 3 with 114 wins) represents the onl> non- DcLiddo-coachcd wrestler on the CSUF lop 10 career wins list. As for the No. 68 ranking, coach DeLiddo failed lo match that with his 5-12 mark his first year at Fresno State. In the past 12 seasons, the 'Dogs have never finished out of the top 50 in the NCAA poles. Ranked No. 6, the '95 'Dogs could be geared for the school's best unit ever. "In 1982 we had never beaten a high-caliber team like Oklahoma or Oregon State; now we're beating them on a consistent level." Most of the wrestlers on this year's team can only appreciate the job DeLiddo's done rejuvenating the program through stories they've heard or by reading through media guides and CSUF record books. But one athlete on the present roster that has seen the revolution from the beginning of DeLiddo's tenure is senior Dc Wayne Zinkin. One of three Zinkin brothers lo claim Western Athletic Conference championships and the nephew of DeLiddo, the Bullard High graduate can remember watching Ihc onslaughts from the sidelines. "When I came to watch the meets as a little kid. 1 remember that they'd (Fresno Slate) be happy to win just one match." Zinkin said. "Now we're winning meets against the best teams in the nation." Both Zinkins will be relied upon heavily this year if the Bulldogs are lo three-peal as WAC champions. DcWaync. who set a school record in '94 wilh 28 straight victories, is ranked 10th in the 134-pound weight division, and Nick, a sophomore, is I2thai 126. The most important piece to Fresno Slate's puzzle is missing for the time being, but by conference championship time the piece should find its proper place. Two-time NCAA runner-up Gerry Abas just surpassed Allen Richburg (125 wins from 1984-88) as Fresno State's career win leader but will miss the remainder of the conference See DELIDDO, page 7 Feat of the Week Cox new king of NCAA pole-vaulting "Mecca " Insight Sports Staff Insight's first "Feat of the Week" award goes to a track and field athlete that soared to new heights Feb. 4, and then broke his own standard Saturday. CSUF's track and field program has built a reputation over the last decade or so as being one of the country's premier, all-around programs. For much longer than that, the school has maintained a reputation as the "Mecca" of pole-vaulting excellence in the United States. It started 55 years ago when Cornelius "Dutch" Warmcrdam became the first man to clear ihc 15- fool barrier, breaking the world record of 14 feet 11 inches set in 1937. Warmcrdam. for whom the CSUF track is named, went on to clear 15 feet or more 43 times before anyone else cleared it even once. Never in Dutch's wildest dreams could he have foreseen the future of CSUF pole vaulting. In 1968. Erkki Mustakari became the first of 11 men at CSUF lo clear 17 feet. The next year, he would be the first of eight Fresno State polc-vault- crs to win conference championships. The only CSUF three-lime conference champ in the event is Doug Fralcy, the first of three Bulldogs lo soar over the 18-foot barrier. The three- time NCAA champion in the mid-1980s established a school record in both the indoors and outdoors that would stand for a decade — until Feb. 4. At ihc Bill Cosby Invitational in Reno, David Cox soared 18 feel 5 inches on his second attempt to dethrone his workout partner, friend and coach, from the top of the indoor record list. On Saturday he returned to Reno for the Holiday Inn Classic and rewrote the record books once again wilh a jump of 18 feet 6 inches. "I'm as pleased now as I was when I broke the record," Fralcy said. "To be part of il (the record) the first time as the athlete, and then again as a coach, is something really special." This is Fraley's first year as ihc pole-vaulting coach, giving his dad. "The school record means a lot here because it has such a great tradition." he said. Cox is excited about his record jump, bul has higher expectations for himself. "I'd like to win indoors." said ihc four-time All-American. "Eighteen feet eight inches could win it and I think that's possible for mc, but even 18 feet has won it in the past."
