Pitching, from page 6 games, allowing only 12 earned runs. The three also struck out 48 batters and went 3-1 with four saves. Fresno fans may be familiar with Donnelly's name. Last year at Fresno City College, the six foot right-hander earned Coast Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year and JC All-Amcri- can honors, posting a glaring 1.86 ERA and 12-1 record. Farfan, whose 5-foot 7-inch frame and Guam background reminds many of a right handed Fernando Valenzuela, comes to CSUF from Laney College. Obviously Lancy College never faced a Stanford or CSU Fullerton. bul the 0.97 ERA and 13-3 record he posted in 1994. would be good in any division. Farfan also earned JC All-American honors. "I knew how good Donnelly was. because I played against him in junior college, and it didn't take long to find out what kind of a pitcher Shorty is," Gunther said. Farfan had an inauspicious debut in the alumni game, walking the first three batters he faced. Once the season began, Farfan lasted 11-plus innings before allowing his first run. With four saves, Farfan has earned the closer role in Ihe bullpen. Donnelly has proven himself to be a competent No. 3 man in the starting rotation and had seemed to have a lock on it until Tucker dazzled thc home crowd Feb. 14 when hc struck out 13 SJSU baiters in eight scoreless innings of work. Thc 13 Ks was the most by a Bulldog since Steve Sodcrstrom whiffed 15 hitters in 1993. Although Fresno State doesn't keep track of first starts, it's unlikely any Bulldog ever had a better collegiate starting debut than Tucker. "I don't get shaken up when I'm on ihe mound," said an un-surprised Tucker following his masterful win against SJSU. "If runners get on base, 1 don't let them get to me: I just keep battling every hitter." Thc Bullard High grad was a first- team All-North Yosemite League pick last year, bul his 2.04 ERA pales in comparison to his current 1.35 ERA. Last year Tucker didn't have a split- finger fastball in his repertoire, however; against thc Spartans, lhat pitch was his kiss of death. "I used the split finger my junior year in high school, but didn't my senior year." Tucker said. "Now I've gone back lo it." The remainder of the staff has only worked a combined 6 2/3 innings thus far. but when needed, there's a group of anxious, competent pitchers in the wing. "There's still guys like JcIT Naster, Scott Navarro and Jeff Weaver who are great pitchers but just haven't gotten a chance yet." Gunther said. Not to be forgotten is junior Victor Mercado. Thc sidc-armer from Mendota fanned 38 batters in only 35 innings last season. "There is so much depth on this staff," Gunther said. "We have the hitting and we have the defense, so if we (ihe pitchers) can keep the runs low, we'll be winning a lot of ball games." Attention All Students! This is especially true of thc No. 3 spot in the starting pitching rotation. Two junior college All-Americans and a freshman have been vying for the position all year long. Tuesday, Feb. 14 against San Jose State, the frosh. Brad Tucker, all but broke that lock. In his first collegiate start, the 18-year-old from Bullard High School struck out 13 batters in eight shutout innings of work. The 13 whiffs were the most issued by a Fresno State pitcher since Steve Soderstrom had 15 in 1993. "He [Tucker] doesn't get rattled when he's on the mound." coach Bob Bennett said. "Against Cal-Berke- ley, he gave up a home run and then came back to strike out the very next batter." It was in that Cal game lhat Tucker first made his mark with Fresno Stale. la Ihe first game of a three-game sweep of the Bears on Feb. 3. The freshman wouldn't get another chance for 11 days, but when the chance arose, he made the most of it. "Every time I go out to the mound I'm trying lo throw a shutout," Tucker said. "But tonight | Feb. I4]my stuff was really on." Bennett will not commit to a definite third starter this early in the season, but the' Fresno State coach of 26 years has been impressed with what he's seen from the freshman. 'Tucker's a quick learner, he's got great courage on the mound, and he's improved mechanically as much as anyone on the staff," Bennett said.
