Lifestyle SEPTEMBER 11, 19961 Junk yard parts keep cars rolling ■ Vehicular transplants just another way to say recycling by Shelley Brown Staff Writer Sometimes junk can be turned into treasure. For evidence of this, just visit Turner's Auto Wrecking yard where forgotten vehicles from thc past are transformed into valuable tools for the future. Turner's Auto Wrecking, at Willow Avenue and Golden State Boulevard, is a car buff's dream. Finding a transmission for a '74 Chevy or restoring a '47 Ford can easily be done there. In fact. Turner's wrecking yard is a lot like The Yellow Pages — if they don't have it, ir> probably doesn't exist. Jerry Turner, owner since 1961. claims thai Turner's is the largest wrecking yard in the world, with 10,000 cars covering more than 65 acres. "We ship parts to places all over the world, with about 20 shipments a day," he said. Not your ordinary junkyard Upon arrival it appears to be like any other wrecking yard — dirty and smelling of oil. But after entering thc office. Turner's becomes an amusement park compared to other wrecking yards. The office, a big tin building, also smells of dirt and oil, but that's soon forgotten as the door creeks open and a big "hello" comes from one or more of the 28 employees running around. While customers wait for someone to help them they can entertain themselves by playing video games, like Astro Fighter, or by viewing the hubcap collection on the wall. But if relaxing is what they want, they can do that too, on one of the old car seats in the lobby. Viewing the merchandise up-close and personal is possible by taking a wild ride in a wrecking yard "taxi." Taxi" through Turner's The blue '86 Toyota Corolla is nice, but it's a little dirty and dusty. Employee and taxi driver Fred Wright has worked at Turner's for eight years and knows where everything is. If someone has a question, he can probably answer it. If he can't be found around the office, he's probably in "Malibu Beach." a section of the wrecking yard where. Wright says, "we all kick back." After finding a much-needed part, the la*i returns to thc office. Lobo. the red Chow that Turner bailed out of "doggie jail." will probably be laying by the front door. Don't worry, he's nol a criminal, just a curious dog who likes to wander the streets. Next to the exit, the pictures on the wall show the faces of many happy customers who have done business at Turner's. There's even an autographed picture of Freddy Fender, who's restoring a '46 Ford. He's smiling —just like the others. Are Youa Proudp Nerd ; If you think measuring a potato chip is more hrilling than a night at Bisla's, tell us! It's still the '50s atjack's ■ Go see classic cars every Friday night at Fat Jack's. by Fernando Gomez Staff Writer Cars had fins, girls wore pony tails and drive-in restaurants were king. At a restaurant just minutes away from campus, those moments from the 1950s and '60s arc relived. Every Friday evening dozen of classic car owners meet at Fat Jack's, a 50s- like restaurant located at 625 W. Shaw Ave. in Clovis. Fat Jack's owner Jack O'Day. a car collector himself, has hosted car enthusiasts al his restaurant since 1985. "I hope this family tradition will continue because this is a good way to socialize and lo keep in louch with family and friends." O'Day said. Sandy Back, right, holds Carlin while Brandon looks at Grandpa, standing. Fat Jack's is an intimate setting. Along with about 10 white plastic tables, it sports a patio where customers can sit and watch classic cars as they pull in. The smell of hamburgers and french fries coming from the kitchen adds to the atmosphere. It's a place for owners to show off their highly polished toys. Modem cars driving down Shaw Avenue draw little attention, and it's no surprise. But traffic docs slow down in front of Fat Jack's as drivers stop to see thc uniqueness and beauty of the classic cars. One classic car owner is Bob Previt. He has been the proud owner of a 1970 Plymouth for 26 years. "I get a lot of attention from people when I'm in my car." Previt said. Richard Brown, a physical therapy major at Fresno State, also collects classic cars. Brown owns seven cars and said that in spite of having spent a fortune on them, he really enjoys showing them off. Some ofthe cars in Brown's collection are a 1930 red Ford Coupe, a 1956 black pro-strcel Chevy and a 1929 Oldsmobile. "When 1 bring my cars to school, my friends think I'm crazy, but I like my cars because 1 get a lot of attention one way or another." Brown said. Many ofthe people who visit Fat Jack's are members of car clubs that participate in car shows, dinners, raffles and other activities to raise money for groups and organizations in need.
