With his mouse in hand, Surry demonstrated a program he designed to illustrate the usefulness of instructional technology on his He "double-clicked" on an icon which opened to a red screen. Another "click" and the William Tell Overture composed by Rossini arose from the computer. A quiz appeared at the bottom of the screen asking the name of thc composer. Cm the "click" and a video clip of Siokely Carmichael, chairman of lhe Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in thc 1960s, appeared on the screen giving a speech as it appeared on television during the 1960s civil rights movement. Surry's demonstration provided an example of how professors can use interactive media to better serve the learning needs of students. Surry, as well as his position, is new io California State Univcrsiiy, Fresno. Thirty-one-ycar-oldSurry graduated from the University of Georgia with a docioraic in education. "1 dropped off my dissertation on a Monday morning in Athens, Ga., and drove to Fresno arriving ihc following Saturday. I started work hereon campus the following Monday. Aug. 1,1993," Surry said. Surry works part-lime in the Computing, Communications and Media Services on campus where hc designs, develops, and evaluates the uses of instructional technology in the classroom. Surry also works half-time in the School of Education where hc leaches a course about die use of micro-computers in education. The use of computers in education has been limited by lhc lack of financial and support resources in the past, however. Surry suggests that this has changed. "Instructional technology is not only affordable money-wise, but is said. Surry is encouraged by lhc support and interest CSUF administrators have displayed.
