Page 10 April 13,1994 Fresno State track -stars blow away competition Jeremy Cloud/Special to INSIGHT Freshman Derrick Mitchell placed 10th in the long jump. By Kelley Scott StaffWriter In the 66th Annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays meet at Ratcliffc Stadium. Fresno State continued to make a name for itself as a top-notch track icam. FSU men's team pulled ofl a close win by defeating Cal for Ihe title by nine points in die Division I category. Thc final points came in the 5,000 meter, ihc last event of the meet. Calfinishcd second with 130 points, Stanford look third wiih 97.USC fourth with 76, UC Santa Barbara fifth with 59,Cal State Long Beach sixth with 28 and rounding out the Division I teams was Reno with 12. Junior Robert Foster, overcoming meningitis, placed second in the 1 IOmeter hurdles. Foster received All- American honors in the indcor 55 hurdles this year. FSU women's team trampled thc competition at thc relays with 38 points between them and thc second place team Cal. Cal fi ni shed wi th 97 poin ts, S lanford took ihird with 81, Long Beach fourth wiih .50, UC Santa Barbara fifth with 38 and coming behind thc rest was Fullerton with 6. Tanya Dooley competing in hcr last Fresno Relays meet as a Fresno State athlete brought about three major victories to put the FSU far out of reach. As lhc All-American Indoor Athlete of lhc Year, Dooley won thc event shc specializes in,thc400 meters,edging oul teammate Richardson who finished second. Dooley was also a panofthc4X 100, 4X400, and 1600 relay learns lhat picked up victories for the FSU squad. Dooley along with Sophomore Samone Cole, Sophomore Kesha Criswell and Senior Auwana Brown ran for a school-record time of 45.50. Freshman Ardin Harrison, Senior Janisha Richardson, Brown and Dooley blew past their competitors by more than 10 seconds with a 3:48.20 in the Junior Rachel Hudson qualified for lhc NCAA Championships in the triple jump after she placed second in thc Relays with a 41 feet six inches. Athlete goes for dream By Lisa Dorman-Stubbs StaffWriter Dan Bigham hasn't let obstacle's like dropping out of school keep him from pursuing his .dream — the dream of being a decathlon winner. Bigham, a 1990 graduate of McLane High School, took second in the Easter Decathlon at CSUF April 3. And his participation in several events al thc 66th Ann ual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays last weekend was his way of staying in shape for thc two decathlon competitions coming up next month. See TRACK, Page 12 Oldest cheerleader going on three decades By Marlene Bryant StaffWriter Thc oldest cheerleader in Fresno State athletics has been rooting for FSU Bulldogs nearly 20 years — for as many or more years ihan many sludents have been alive! Inman Perkins, 53, said hc has done it for so long because "lhai's where my heart is." Hc explained that he was in grammar school when hc firsl saw ihc FSU marching band. Hc thought then that ii would be greal to go to CSUF and be a pan of the school. "I never thought thai I would actually make it.lhough," Perkins said. "When I did get there it was like a dream." Hc .recalled that when hc attended CSUF, the football team had noi won a bowl game in several years. "At thai time, Cily won bowl games andcitychampionships."hcsaid. "Our FSU (athletics) program has won over lhc years. Now ihcy havca great team." In 1965, Perkins graduated from Fresno City College and made the chcerleading iquad ihcrc where hc stayed for three years before dropping it In 1975 hc assisted advisor Tom Kane in teaching routines and crowd control loFrcsnoCiiyCollcgc'scheer- leadcrs. In 1977 he went to a baseball game wiihhiswifc. Thcbascballplaycrsand his wife encouraged him to do a cheer. Perkins now belongs toa small group called thc Rag City Renegades. Their main purpose is to rag on ihc other team's players at sporting events. Perkins said that Iheir comments are not anything a child would be afraid to repeat. Todd Riech,acriminology major from Montana, threw for the world's best mark in 1994 in thc javelin event. Riech ihrcw for a record best of 258 feet 6 inches, taking home firsl place and giving Fresno State valuable points to achieve lop ranking in the mcci. As a three-lime state champion in Montana in the 100 and 200 rs and; tiller in the 400 and the javelin, Riech was recruited by FSU as a decathlete. But Riech fell his track events weren't taking him anywhere. "I got burned out running and I wanted to be successful," Riech said of his choice to discontinue running events and solely concentrate on his javelin technique. "I can go as far as I want to go,"Rcich said of continuing in his now specialty event. Hc is hopeful on making the Olympics in 19% and is now planning on participating in lhc Olympic trials in June 1996. Only lhe top three qualifiers will reach Atlanta.
