Every year I like to do a Mezzo-soprano Helene Joseph- concert in her memory. Five of the works were composed specifically for the mezzo- soprano by Susan Alexander, Alan Brett and award-winning California composer SondraClark. Rounding out thc short program are cx- prcssionistic, early songs of Alban Berg (Opus 2). Thc recital will feature twoworld premieres: Alan Brett's Suite de Cancioncs: "Los Gatos" for voice and piano and Incantations for solo cello, composed by CSUF Music Department Chair Jack Fortncr. Myers. Thc book has a profound influence on Taiwan, and is now being published by lhc Standford University Hoover Instituton Press. The book talks aboul controversial treaty between Mainland China and Taiwan during World War II. Political power struggling between two leaders represent communist China and democratic Taiwan arc also the key points mentioned in thc book. "History can reflect thc pastas well is predict the future;" said Hsu Hsin Chang, a professor of the history. Having taught history since 1966, Chang estimated lhat through his 28 yearsof experience, hc has taught more than 200 classes and 7,000 sludents. According to Chang, leaching history is not an easy task. To overcome the language barrier, hc needs to analyze thc history from a different angle in order to have a better understanding to present to his students. Since Chang is not a native American, whenever hc presents his lecture in class, he lakes all things inlo consideration such as the reaction from students and their understanding. His goal is not only to teach history but to make history interesting. When hc faces the students from different nationalities, culture and cnihic groups, Chang must be careful and prudent while hc is presenting certain sensitive or controversial historical events. Chang special izes in East Asian Civilization, Modem Far East and American History from 1865 to ihc present Hc graduated at National Taiwan University, got his M.A. and M.S. at the University of Missouri and Fieri daSiaic UnivcrsityandhisPh.D.althcUnivTsity of Wisconsin. in addition, hc has one year post- oociorial experience at Harvard University.
