Perhaps it has been affectionately renamed because it is so hard to get to "the show." It is the dream of every little league, high school, college and minor league baseball player. Yet the percentage of athletes that do make it is small, almost microscopic. Fresno State's Head Coach Bob Bennett has had numerous baseball players drafted by a major league club. Currendy there are six players in the major leagues and 29 in the minor leagues. On Jan. 30, several of those players returned to their old stomping grounds to compete in the annual FSU alumni game at Bciden Field. These players included Mark Gardner, Tom Good win, StcveHosey, Bobby Jones Eddie Zosky, Brant Brown, Terance Frazier, Chris Falco and Philip Romero. These guys didn 'tdisappoint the largest crowd ever to see an alumni game. Gardner pitched the first inning, allowed two hits and struck out two . Gardner was at FSU until 1985. He had a 24-5 record with a 352 ERA. During his senior season Gardner was named second-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America Magazine. He was also named Player of the Year in the Pacific Coast Athletic As- In 1985, Gardner was drafted by the Montreal Expos. "It was exciting." Gardner said. The feeling was electrifying. It all starts when you're young." Gardner spent four years in the Expo farm system before being called up to the major leagues in 1989. In three years with the Expos Gardner compiled a 28-33 record with a 3.96 ERA in 94 appearances. He started 87 games. During the off season Gardner was traded to the Kansas Cily Royals. He was anything but disappointed although he enjoyed his stay in Montreal. Gardner will have to make adjustments to the new league. He will have to deal with the designated hitter. "The Royals have a great organization and we'll have a real good team," Gardner said. "It's going to be quite a different ballgame." Bennett said thi s could be good for the right-hander. "I think he'll enjoy it, not that he didn't like Montreal" Bennett said. "He'll be in the United States, which is a different tax structure and he'll be closer to his wife. He feels like he's in the big leagues. I think that's a big plus for a ball player plus he likes the organization. They (the Royals) feel it's a big deal that they have Mark Gardner on their team. In the National League he was taken out of a lot of ball games when the score was 1 -0 or 2-1. Now he won't have to worry about that. Unlike Gardner the other alumni have not entrenched themselves in the major leagues yet, Goodwin, Hosey, Zosky have spent time in the big leagues but have yet to spend an entire season with the bigclub. However, this could be the year that changes. Goodwin was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the 22nd pick in the first round of the June 1989 draft. He hit 350 in three seasons with the Bulldogs. He is the career leader in hits with 287, stolen bases with 164 and runs scored (207). Goodwin has been called up to the major leagues several times, but has never spent an entire season with the Dodgers. However that may change this season. Spring training starts Feb. 18 and Goodwin has been invited to Vcro Beach for a shot at making "the show." "I'm excited," Goodwin said. "It's great to get an opportunity to make the club." "I've never seen anybody run like Tom Goodwin," Bennett said. Bennett has been in the game of baseball for a lot of years and has some advice for the Dodgers. "Put him in the outfield and let him play," Bennett said. "I'd let him play this year if I wanted to win a pennant because he can do things [wiih his speed]. He's got that kind of speed. He's more than a one-dimensional player because he's a real good outfielder. I don't think I'd take (Brett) Butler out of the outfield because he also has talent. But they're banking on the big guys. Strawberry and Davis, again this year." Jones will also be invited to spring training this season. Jones was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round of the 1991 draft. He was the 36th pick overall. He was almost untouchable for the Bulldogs. The right-handed pitcher led the Bulldogs to the College World Scries with a 16-2 record and a 1.88 ERA in 1991. He also had 18 complete games and was named NCAA Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. "I was excited; I figured I'd be drafted," Jones said. "I was happy being chosen by the Mets. I have no pressure on me." Bennett said Jones would have been called up to the Mets last season if it wasn't for the expansion draft, • "If they would've called him up then he would've been one of the first guys thrown into the draft." Bennett said. "I believe he'll start at triple A and in two Hector Amezcua/Special to Insight Tom Goodwin went 4-5 in the Annual FSU Alumni Game on Jan. 30\The 'Dogs opened play last weekend. to three weeks he' 11 be their third, fpurth or fifth starter. Hosey spent time in the big leagues last season with the San Francisco Giants. He played in 21 games and hit .250 with one home run and six RBIs. The right-handed outfielder played at Fresno State through 1989 when he was drafted in the first round^with the 14thpick. Zosky played in 26 games at shortstop for the World Champion Toronto BlueJays.Hehad34atbaisandhit.176 with ihree RBIs. He was also drafted in the first round of the 1989 draft. Bennett said the sky's the limit for Hosey and Zosky. " I see Hosey playing in the big leagues next year and starting to move toward being one of the big guys in the game," Bennett said. "He's a good all-around player. He's got a good throwing arm, he runs well, he's got good power and he's 'tuned in' so he'll be a big-time player. "Zosky's a big-league shortstop. When he makes it he'll be the guy that you measure other shortstops after. He's struggled a little bit up until this point, probably the pressure, probably a little tight. I can see him being in the big leagues". Brown and Romero arc the newest 'Dogs to be drafted. Both players finished careers at FSU after the 1992 season. Brown was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and Romero by the Philadelphia Phillies. Maybe one day they will make their dreams come true and join Gardner, Goodwin, Jones, Hosey and Zosky in "the show." 1993 softball preview: Fresno State enters the WAC •>Diamond Lady 'Dogs start new *ra with youthful spirit. The College World Series has become a very familiar meeting place forthe Bulldogs. They have attended each of the last six, placing second in 1988, '89 and '90. Seven of the 19 players listed on this years roster are freshmen. In fact the average collegiate experience of the entire team is Margie Wright, head coach. only 1.2 years. A.C. will be Cal State Northridgc (#14 preseason),New Mexico.Sacramento State, San Diego State, Southern Utah and Utah. Two veterans that will lead FSU into battle this year arc senior pitcher Marcie Green and junior shortstop Kim Mahcr. Green, 23-8 with a 0.63 ERA last season, hopes her senior year is just as productive. Green ranks 7th in career victories and 5th in career shutouts at FSU with 45. Maureen Brady and Lisa Mize culminate a solid rotation. Kim Mahcr, two time A1I-CWS selection, will anchor a solid infield forthe 'Dogs. Maher will be looking to improve on her already impressive offensive stats. She led the 'Dogs in almost every major offensive category last season and is approaching career marks in HR's, RBI's and doubles. Melisa Thatcher (3B).
