Page 8 Insight/California State University, Fresno October 20,1993 Blind faith gets CSUF jogger up and running By Fred Lee StaffWriter The cool mist of morning gentfy sealed on the Warmerdam Field as track runner Marsha Martin steadily made her way around the track. Martin is trainine for a 13-mile race. Unlike other athletes, she has been Mind since birth. She has overcome the challenges of a sighdess childhood and now projects herself as a competent, self- sufficient adulL In the early years of her youth, Martin had incredible support from friends and teachers. "I failed school until I was in junior high," Martin said. 'Tart of the problem was that my parents wouldn't let me go to a special school "My mother didn'tacceptmy blindness. She was bound and determined that I was going to be a sighted person. "In the cariy 50's. there was no mainstreaming. Teachers were not taught or adapted to disabilities." she said. Judy Nowell, an assistant in the women's locker room at CSUF, has always encouraged Martin. "Above everything, Marsha has wanted people to accept her as a person," Nowell said. "She wants to be treated like anybody else. If you treat her like she has a problem, she won't like you." Martin's most amazing attribute is not the fact that she washes cars or cleans people's houses, but how she does it—with a smile. "Marsha has an incredible sense of humor," Nowell said. "She has taught me how to deal with people with a handicap. They are no different than I and they have a fantastic outlook on life. "Most of all, she taught me not to be afraid of anything. Life is too short to be unhappy and worry about things. There is nothing she is afraid to do." Bene and Cecil Alford have been Martin's friends for 21 years. "We told her she could always depend on us," Alford said. "I guess you could say we are Iter home-away-from- home." Members of the Fresno Joggers volunteered to be sighted guides for the blind. Martin ran with them and was soon entering races on her own. Martin said her training consists of 10-12 miles a day and a well-balanced diet "I walked Warmerdam Field 20 times before I had the nerve to run it," she said She earned degrees from CSUF in home economics in 1976 and physical education in 1978. Martin was laid off last year by Fresno Unified School District where she worked for the Disability Awareness Program. Martin is now trying to get back to Ecuador where she spent six years in the Peace Corps from 1983-89. "It drives me nuts when somebody says, 'You can't do that' and they don't even give me a chance." —Marsha Martin "Without a job or any money, it's hard," Nowell said. "[Martin] is on a horribly light bud- B«. "All she gets is what the government gives her and even that has been cut back." CSUF Track and Field Coach Red Estes said Martin's ability to join in all the P.E. activities using a beeping socccrball, volleyball and softball was an inspiration. "She didn't want to be left out," he said. "She didn' i wan t any special treatment." "It drives mc nuts when somebody says,'Youcan'tdo that'and they don't even give mc a chance," Martin said. T m not going to be able to succeed at everything, but if I've tried and I can'i do it, then I can accept that," Fresno goes King-less; swam slips Swam's Stats Week: 2-3 (-1 point) Season: 9-6 (4 points) a Just silling at my computer I began wondering how the Los Angeles Kings arc doing this season. You remember ihc Kings, don't you? They're the tcam thai was one crooked stick away from being the Stanley Cup Champions? Is there anyoncelscoutiherc who's as angry as I am aboul Prime Ticket being ousted for ESPN2? When I first heard thai Continental Cablevision was losing Prime Ticket, I seriously thought about dropping my cable subscription. But I figured ESPN2 would show plenty of Kings games since wc live here on the West Coast and they arc one of the more popular teams in the country. However, like the Swami lately, l was wrong. Trying to find information on the Kings is like trying to beat die Bulldogs at home—nearly impossible. 1 need more than just a score on ESPN and a paragraph from the Fresno Bee. Don'tgct me wrong. 1 enjoy watching the hockey games on ESPN2, but I'm tired of seeing the Montreal Canadians play. I've seen them four times already. ApparcnUy the only time the Kings will be on ESPN2 is when they travel to the east coast because those are the only games on there. Did anyone see die Mighty Dorks (oops! I mean 'Ducks') of Anaheim win their first NHL game? The announcers thought ihcy were reliving the American upset of the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. "HOCKEY HISTORY! HOCKEY HISTORY," they screamed. I guess with the number of games they're going to win this year, every win will be worth screaming over. Besides hockey, is there anything else worthwhile on this stupid channel? Off-road racing, auto racing, fishing, skiing and aerobics 24 hours a day does not make a new station. That's the jobof the original ESPN! They might as well add wresUing, roller derby, dog racing, tabic tennis and the American Gladiators to their vast array of sporting entertainment. Why arc there three NHL teams in sunny California, two teams in balmy Florida, one team in good ol' Texas and NO teams in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio? Speaking of illogical probabilities, the Swam, after reaching ihc mountain top, is on his way down, going 2- 3 for the second straight week. Determined to put this downspin out of everyone's minds, here is the Swamstcr's NFL picks. If he starts doing better, maybe he can land a job atf < t SWAMI SAYS... Game 1: Detroit at LA. Rams. "This is one of the worst weeks of football the NFL has to offer this week. When the Lions and the Rams are one of my lop three games of the week, you know something's terribly wrong. This pick is a borderline out- on-a-limb pick - L.A. to beat Detroit. I feel the vociferous Rams' fans will throw the Lions off their game (hec- hcc)." FINAL SCORE: L.A. Rams 24. Detroit 21. Game 2: Pittsburgh at Cleveland. "Despite die fact that I picked both teams to lose last week and they both won, I feel that one of these teams will lose this week. Pretty bold, huh? The way I'm going lately, this game will end in a tie. The way Pittsburgh beat New Orleans last week, I've gotta take them this week." FINAL SCORE: Pittsburgh 21. Cleveland 13. Game 3: New England at Seattle. "YUCK! Didn't the NFL torture us enough by putting these two worthless teams together a few weeks ago? This game falls into the 'Who cares?' category. New England upset the Phoenix Cardinals last week, so I'll take Seattle." FINAL SCORE: Se- aulc 35, New England 10. No Brainer: Atlanta at New Orleans. "The Saints are very angry for being embarrassed by Pittsburgh last week. They will show no mercy against Atlanta. Sure the Falcons beat the Rams last week, but like they say, 'Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.'" FINAL SCORE: New Orleans 38, Atlanta 6. Out on a Limb: Buffalo at N.Y. Jets. "For some reason, the Bills always seem to have trouble playing in Giants Stadium. This will be a great game and barring any serious injuries, the Jets will upset the three-time Super Bowl losers." FINAL SCORE: N.Y Jets 20, Buffalo 17. (you) prleesX Goodbody's Pub 2915 N. Haroa 229-2355 KARKAZIAN CERTified JeweLers & WatcHmaKers George Karkazlan Western Village 711 W.
