Kicker cares for kids By Kelley Scott StaffWriter The kicker on a football team can become a hero or a failure in a matter of seconds on the field. But when it comes to the children at the Valley Children's Hospital, Fresno State's kicker, Derek Mahoncy, could never be a failure in their eyes. You go over there and these kids have two or three times the courage that we have." Mahoncy has been visiting with sick children for the pasl few years along with other players on the Fresno Slate football team. "I think it really touches home with a lot of the players." Mahoncy said. "I think what's awesome is you can go there and just by talking to them and giving them balloons and signing some autographs, you put a little sunshine back in their day and in their life." Mahoncy tries lo make an impact on the Fresno community by giving back, through the children. FSU kicker, Derek Mahoney spends extra time with some Bulldog faithfuls by signing autographs. "He's just like his mother; shy, withdrawn, sensitive and really cares aboul other people," said Dave Mahoncy, Derek's father. "He loves working with kids."
