Woodward's CSUF speech professor finally talked him into giving a speech, andliitlc did heknow he would soon be talking to a much larger audience. He got his first taste of sports broadcasting behind the microphone after being invited to visit the press box at a local high school football game. Woodward watched radio an nouncer Dick Shcppcrd broadcast ihe game. Then out of ihc blue, Shcppcrd asked Bill if he could read a commercial live over the air. "It was a commercial for Jack Haley's Tire Center," Woodward said. "The worst commercial or announcement I ever did." Shcppcrd would later hire Woodward ai KMJ. After graduating from college. Woodward did radio sports both in Oregon and Montana before returning io Fresno. The station was looking for someone to replace An Dove, and was accepting tapes and resumes, wanting on-air samples of announcers calling both basketball and football.
