Page 4 March 17,1993 It six years old Tammy Fesler began to ride in the junior rodeos around Santa Maria, California where she lived. Today at 22, and with all of those years under her belt, Fesler is ranked number one as a breakaway roper. Fesler is now concentrating on keeping her rank in tact this season. With 190 points, Fesler has little time to waste. Tammy Vick, the second place roper, is a mere 35 points behind. Last year Fesler rode into Coalinga, California to face Vick in the breakaway competition. "My rodeo season was not going well. I needed to finish in the top five to stay close to the leaders," Fesler said. What happened in Coalinga sent Fesler to the top. Her time in breakaway was 2.5 seconds, the fastest time in the event. Her competition could only mark at 3.8 seconds. "Winning at Coalinga was one of my best moments. I used toattend West Hills College in Coalinga. Going back and winning made my whole season. "From that point, my rodeo season turned around for the better. I became more confident and everything started to fall into place," Fesler said. The Coalinga rodeo team is one of the top ranked teams in the nation and Vick Ls, or has been, on the top of the standing for many years. "I will try to stay ahead of Vkk.she is very competitive. I practice and practicing timing with my horse Splinters; this way, our timing will become a natural set of moves," she said. "Splinters is my all-around horse. Once we have our timing, we become one entity. That is when we become winners. Noone likes to lose, and surely we do not," Fesler said. Like any team, both the men's and women's rodeo teams have great potential, according to Fesler. What is missing is the support from people on and off campus. Breakaway roping is an event wherein the rider chases a calf and ropes it around the neck. Once the rope is around the calf the rope comes apart with a tug from the calf. Breakaway roping is only one of Fesler's events. "I compete in the barrel racing, goat tying and and the team roping events, all of this will keep me very busy. "We have a competitive team, Lynette McGill and Trace Humphrey are doing well in their events and they will keep the pressure on me, as I will on them. It makes for a great team," Fesler said. Breakaway roping is termed because once the calf is snared, it requires onlya tug to the rope to be set free. Below: Nick inches closer to Fesler as they prepare for their practice run. Using her 1988 prize winning all-around saddle for practice as well as competition, Fesler prepares one of her newest horeses, Nick, for practice. The name of the game is "practice." said Fesler. She demonstrates her roping form that has placed her in the top position in the West Coast Region, which consists of California and Nevada. *V By Gene Rose March 18th 3:00pm - 4:30 pm General Book Department Lower Level 2/8-4286 lllfJIJ.M.lWJIJIL4iJ,III.UAIJJJ.I.UUJ.U»M..IJlrfJ!W 'Everything for the traveler, except the tickets! *> Maps ■> Voltage Converters ■> Electrical Adaptors •> Money Belts -j + Guide Books (including the complete line of Lei's Go!. the new Berkeley Guides, andlhe "93 Hurail Guide) ►> Travel Packs, Back Packs.
