By Marquese Brown Sports Writer Many people have a common stereotypical view of college athletes: They are wonderful physical specimens, graceful in their domain and a joy to watch.Yet many are self-centered and lack desire when it comes to being in tune with religion and spirituality. Brandon Bakke and a number of other student athletes on campus hope to change that misconception. Bakke,a guard on the bulldog basketball team, has been a member for the past two years. He is the current vice-president of the Fresno chapter of FCA. FCA, the longest running Christian sports organization, has a chapter on every college campus in the country. FCA has been on Fresno State's campus for about 20 years. The organization usually meets once or twice a week for athletes to set aside all of their personal prob lems and achievements and give glory to God. The Fresno chapter was started by Dick Francis the former bulldog head wrestling coach. "It began as just a Monday night bible study," Bakke said, "but over the years, because there has been a lot more interest, we've expanded it." Bulldog Assistant Track Coach Bob Fraley now runs FCA and its members represent a number of sports. "It helps you feel good about yourself." - De Andre Austin, FCA Tanya Dooley, a member of the bulldog track team and a 400 meter Ail-American, is FCA's president Trent Dilfer, quarterback of the football team, baseball player Eric Newman and pole vaulter David Cox are just a few of FCA's members. DeAndre Austin, another guard on the basketball team, says being involved in FCA makes him proud. "It helps you feel good about your- self." be said." Givingglory to God is something you should be proud of." FCA now meets on Monday and Wednesday nights. Monday's meetings are held at coach Fraley's house and are open to everyone. They are about thirty people in attendance. Wednesday's meetings are held at Bakke's apartment, near campus, and are only open to baseball, football and basketball players. About half as many people attend Bakke's meetings as do Fraley's. FCA has a guest speaker once a month at the Picadilly Inn Hotel. In ^^^^^^^^^ February it ■ was Bubba Paris, offensive lineman for the India- n a p o 1 i s Colts. Last Tuesday it | was Kenneth Lovely, former Bulldog football player who is now a Pastor. There were approximately 80 people in attendance. FCA is planning a prayer breakfast on May 11. A location has not been established yet, but they hope to get between 400-500 guests. Bakke says FCA's only goal is for the organization to continue to grow. "If we continue to grow this means that more and more people are getting excited about God." Will March showers bring April flowers? ♦ Rain halts play; 'Dogs open long homestand in the month of April By Fred Lee Sports Editor Early season rain showers postponed two of Fresno State's games with San Diego State last week. This could be a blessing in disguise. The 'Dogs opened a long 17-gamc homestand yesterday, a much needed homesiand since the 'Dogs are playing twice as good at home than they arc on the road this year. RHP Steve Soderstrom, a pre-sea- son All-American, has had some tightness in his right elbow and could use the time-off to rest and gel stronger. LHP Mike Salazar has been a pleasant surprise winning his last five starts. He went 2-0 and struck out 18 batters in 18 innings in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. Junior left-fielder Brad Dandridge has been on a tear increasing his batting average over 100 points in the last 22 games. Her 53.63, a personal best, was good enough for first place in the three- way meet with Iowa and USC. The women beat USC 84-47.The men defeated USC 83- 80, the first time FSU has ever defeated USC in track and field. * Head Women's Basketball Coach Bob Spencer finished his first season in the WAC 10-17. In his 12 seasons at FSU, Spencer has compiled a 198-147 record. His 27 seasons as a head basketball coach have seen 578 wins and only 271 losses, second only to Jody Conradt of Texas on the NCAA's all-time win list * Annual Red-White spring football scrimmage last friday night saw the offense beat I the defense, 39-35. Trent Dilfer went 4-4 for 84 yards, Derek Mahoney was perfect kicking fieid goals and Michael Ross caught a 54-yard TD pass from Rich Donatti. * Over the course of the season, 19 records have fallen under first-year Head Swimming | Coach Daniella Irle. The latest, by freshman Carrie Bennett, came at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Long Beach last week. Her time of 51.59 in the 100-yard freestyle was thelOth-fastest time overall and a school record. Bennett also set the FSU record in the 50-yard freestyle, 23.83, en route to a sixth-place finish.
