"The doctors know," Jay said. "It is just that the government is standing in the way." Jay said, "I just think, for not only AIDS but for cancer, we need to start vie wing marijuana in a different lighL" In 1990 it seemed as if attitudes about using medical marijuana were starting to change. In January of that year, after months of effort, the first person with AIDS received government-approved suppliesof marijuana for medicinal purposes. According to a publication of the Drug Policy Foundation, between 1990 and 1991 more than 300 people applied to the government seeking marijuana cigarettes for medical use. Only 11 AIDS patients' applications were approved. These 11 people received legal marijuana from the federal government through the Compassionate IND (investigative new drug) program. First developed in 1978. the Compassionate IND program allowed a doctor to get legal supplies of marijuana from the federal government to treat patients suffering from life- threatening or scnsc-thrcatcning diseases, like AIDS, cancer or glaucoma. But is it likely that marijuana will be legalized for medicinal uses? Randall seems to think so. "All indications arc that the public is fed up with the bureaucratic prohibition." Randall said. And Jay said that legalization for people with AIDS is "not probable, but it is possible." All things considered, there remains the hypothetical question of whether marijuana should Decontrolled by the FDA or whether people should be allowed to grow it in their backyards. On this issue, opinions definitely vary. Some people with AIDS believe that the pharmaceutical companies arc making enough money from the AIDS epidemic. Jay said, "I just got acouple of drugs refilled and the retail cost was over S500., and I know people whose monthly pharmaceutical expenses are a lot more than that." "Pharmaceutical companies arc making a lot of money from this thing [AIDS].' Jay said. "I think that anybody who is over the age of 18 should be able to get a permit to grow a couple of plants per year," Jay said. But the Alliance and the MARS project is designed specifically to try and make marijuana available by prescription.. Randall said that the Alliance supports legalization through prescription rather than backyard growth because. "People who are seriously ill don't want to be gardeners." Randall said, "If you arc a woman with breast cancer, you don't want to wait 16 weeks for medication to alleviate the side effects of your chemotherapy." Randall added, "It seems best to makcitapartof routine medical care." 85' FORD BRONCO XLT 4x4 Automatic transmissioi Captain chairs LOW MILES 292-0357 AJ's# ACADEMIC EDITING TYPING RESUMES LASER PRINTING Mon.-Fri. 9-6 Sat. 9-1 2055 E.
