Tanya Dooley. sprinter on the FSU track team, did not have much competition. "In high school no one was even close," Dooley said. "When I came to FSU it was different; for the first time I had loughcom petition", Dooley said. But Dooley was not always interested in track. Dooley's track career began in the fourth grade. Her first choice wasn't track though; she really wanted io get involved in gymnastics. Dooley weni with her second choice, track, because there were not many opportunities in Angels Camp, Calif., Dooley's hometown, to pursue her desire io participate in gymnastics. In elementary school, track was merely a hobby for Dooley. "It was just something fun to pass the time," she said. It wasn't until her junior or senior year, when Dooley was a sprinter and a cross country runner, that she began taking track seriously. It was at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp that Dooley started showing her potential to be competitive in track. Dooley was a 400-meter qualifier for the California State Championships all four years in high school and in 1989 and 1990 she finished second in die slate championships. Dooley also competed at ihe TAC Junior National Championships the summer after her senior year. During her high school track career, Dooley set personal records of 53.97 inthe400and24.1 in the 200. Dooley was also named Outstanding Athlete all four years of high school. Sprinting wasn't Dooley'sonly forte in high school. She also lettered in cross country and in 1988 and 1989 Jicr track team won slate championships. The honors and awards Dooley ac- "I came to Fresno Slate so I could be closer to my family." Dooley said her final decision to go to Fresno Slate even surprised her. "When I was in high school I always said I wasn't going to go to Fresno Slate," Dooley said. "1 wanted to go to the beach." Dooley said that after talking to the Fresno Stale coaches she knew it was where she wanted io go. "All the teammates were really friendly and I admired the coaches," Dooley said. "I'm blessed to be on the track team and 1 don't regret coming to FSU at all." Along with being more focused, Dooley said college athletes develop closer relationships with their team- "In college we work together-we work as a team," Dooley said. "When we go to a meet we think about what we can do io help the team." Green said there is some pressure being the ace and team leader this year. "Ifyourgonnabeagoodpitcher, you have to want thai pressure," she said. Green has known pressure since her firsi game as a Bulldog when she lost 5-1 against top-ranked UCLA. She said it was a dream to play UCLA her first game as a Bulldog. She capped off a remarkable freshman season going 2-0 and striking out a tournament leading 14 at the 1990 College World Scries (CWS), and being named to the 1990 CWS all- Christi, I will love you Forever! Green said her curve ball is her "brcad-and-buticr" pilch, bui her favorite is ihc change-up. , "The change-up frustrates people because it's going so slow," said Green. Wright said Green's variety of pitches and speeds are her strengths as a pitcher. "She gels ahead of ihc batter and keeps them off balance," said Wright. Heading into her senior year. Green is set to rewrite the Bulldog softball record book. She is currenUy fourth in career no- hitters (4), fifth in career shutouls (46). 16 in 1992, sixth in strikeouts (388). complete games (76) and wins (67), 67-15 for her career, and seventh in innings pitched. "Wiih cross country running you're try ing to build endurance, while sprinters work on their quickness." When it came down lo making a decision. Dooley chose sprinting. "My last two years in high school, I didn't enjoy cross country," Dooley said. "I'd much rather run disianccs under 60 seconds than run three or more miles." One of Dooley's first encounters with tough college competition was during ^^^^^^ her freshman year al I FrcsnoSlate when she competed in the mile relay with the U.S. Junior National team in Jamaica. 'Traveling with the U.S. Junior National team to Jamaica was one of the biggest ^m^m^^ thrills of my life." Dooley said. "I was able to meet some top notch track athletes and it was exciting to compete on that level." Dooley has accumulated many honors and awards at Fresno Slate. She was named an NCAA Indoor Ail- American after running a 54.01 and finishing seventh in ihc 400-mcicrs al the NCAA Indoor Championships last March. She also ran a Fresno Slate all- time best of 53.76 in NCAA Indoor qualifying heats and collected the only Bulldog individual win al the Fresno "Relays with a 54.58 finish in the 400- mctcrdash last season. Although Dooley had the second- Dooley holds the second fast est 200m time in FSU history(24.10). fastest 400-mctcr time in die Big/ West Conference last season, she finished fourth in the conference meet after experiencing foot problems. "I started having bad pains at the top of my foot a monih before the conference meet and the pains progressively got worse." Dooley said. Although Dooley was hindered by these pains her freshman year, she has not had any pains yet this season. "The coaches keep asking mc if I' vc had any pains because it always seems to happen around this time of year," Dooley said. Dooley's performance at the WAC Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo, two weeks ago suggests she is in tip-top condition. Dooley broke the WAC Indoor Championship 400 meter record in qualifying heats, and again in the / finals, io help her win the indoor title. Her limes were: 55.05 in the second qualifying heat and 54.42 in ihe finals. Dooley's competitive performance is steering her towards a spot at the NCAA Championships March 6. As il stands right now, Dooley is seventh in the nation, provisionally qualifying her to go to the NCAA Championships. However, Tom Pagani, women's head track coach, said you never know for sure if you qualify until the last minute. Dooley would like to continue her track career after graduation and pos- sibly.tryoul for ihe Olympics. Even if she docs not make the Olympic team, Dooley said she wants to be involved with track. "I would like to continue running for a few years and be an assistant track coach at FSU," Dooley said. Her dream is lo win ihe national championship. The Bulldogs were ranked number three in preseason polls and are looking to get back to the CWS for ihe seventh straight year. It will be a challenge for Green to lead the Bulldogs io the CWS. but a challenge like thai suits Marcic Green just fine. Off the wall . * Senior sprinter Paul Castle ran 21.16 in the 200m dash at the Bulldog All-Comers meet last Saturday. His time ranks 8th all-time at FSU in the 200. * Junior right-hander Steve Soderstrom struck out 16 batters in the 'Dogs 6-1 win over Wyoming last Friday. He was 4 short of the FSU single game record of 20 shared by Truman Cleaver ('53) and Dick Ruthven (72). * The Men's Basketball team shot an amazing 73.7% from the floor and 60.0% for the game, a season high, in their 83-78 victory over Colorado State | last thursday. The win clinched sixth place for the 'Dogs who will start WAC Tournament play tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. vs. New Mexico. * With 2 more homeruns over the weekend in Arizona, Junior Kim Maher has become the all-time leader in homeruns at FSU with 15. * Kim Allen's 39'5" Triple Jump last Saturday is 4th all-time at FSU.
