By Chris Ruiz Staff Water When it comes to computers, what is the preferred personal computer choice of Fresno State students — Apple Macintosh Computers or Personal Computers? At the lower level of the Kennel Bookstore, both Apple and PCs can be found for sale "Since we brought in PCs for sale in the h<x>kstore this past semester, they have been outselling Apples." said Humberto Ycvenno. computer sales manager at the Kennel Bookstore. Overall sales of Apple computers have taken a severe hit in the past years, not only at the bookstore, hut at retail outlets nationwide. "1 think students prefer PC's because of the lower price range." Yevenno said "Most students just want to use a computer for word processing, playing games and going on the Internet They can do that and pay a lower price for the PC ." Apple, whose simplicity spurred the growth of the home computer industry, has consistently lost market share as IBM-based PCs adopted software to make them Applelike in their operation. But according to a Jan 14 press release, Apple's first- quarter earnings for 1998 increased. Steve Jobs "We continue to streamline our business and work with industry partners to facilitate this focus " The profits were the result of an impressive intro duct ion of the Apple's Power Macintosh G3 computer to the market"Over 133,000 03 units were sold during the quarter, making it the most successful new product launched in the history of the company A person can walk into the Kennel B»»kstore and the G3 units are there However. al prices ranging from a little under $ 1.900 lo $2,800, they haven't been flying off the shelves Another computer, the Power Macintosh 5500, costs $1,529 It includes 16 mega bytes of RAM. a two gigabyte hard drive, keyboard. 15-inch monitor and pre-installed software But if btg features are wanted from the Macintosh, expect to pay big prices Serious computer users like the Power Macintosh 9600. whichnjnsaeoom.554at the book store.
