OCTOBER 2, 1996 ■ Barry's back, finds her niche by Robert Bilvado Staff Writer Soccer standout Erin Barry's season ended last year with a stress fracture to her left leg four games into the team's first Division 1-A season. The team went on to post a 9-win, II-loss. I-tie record. However, the "96-'97 team is showing early signs that they have thc chemistry to mix a Western Athletic Conference Championship. As for Barry, she's back, healthy — and has found her niche. Barry, along with midfielder Kristin Sinclair and forwards Cheryl Gano and Megan McAlpin, collectively provide- the Bulldogs with scoring ing the team. Head Coach Peter Reynaud is able to comfortably lean back in his chair and review the season with contentment. "Right now. I'm really pleased," Reynaud said a couple of days after defeating USC 2-1. He also said that early wins over Cal State Fullerton. Sonoma Slate and UC Santa Barbara have contributed to his vision of this team's potential. "Our starting schedule was a lot tougher this year." Reynaud said. Even though their schedule doesn'l show any signs of relief, the 'Dogs are optimistic. Barry said she and her team are mentally ready for whatever may be on the schedule this season. "No matter whal team we go against, we practice like we are going againsi the best." Barry said . Their first loss to the San Diego State Aztecs was written off by Reynaud as a "dip" in the season. "It's difficult when we have this many starting freshman." Reynaud said. "You want to have dips and not slumps." One-point wins, such as those over Sonoma State and USC. are not unusual for the veterans of this team. Last year's team was 6-4 in matches decided by one point. However, they r v have experience under their belt. Last freshm they continue to play key roles. "This year there is a lot more skill on the team." Barry said. "We're also closer as far as friendship goes." Reynaud agrees that this year's team is mixing well. "We always have team chemistry." said Reynaud.
