; Sports APRIL 5,1995 Photo by Christina Mlrlglan/lnslght A highlight of Saturday's meet was the 17'3/4" jump by decathlete Dave Johnson. It was his best mark In the pole vault since 1992. Relays, from page 10 Bowen and Barnes also teamed up with Scottie Stokes and 1994 NCAA champ in the 110-meter high hurdles, Robert Foster, to win the 400 relay in 40.05. Foster was one of the marquee names at the 67th annual event, but had a disappointing performance in an ugly high hurdles race. Among a cast of competitors that included four former NCAA champs, Glenn Terry and Eugene Swift, last year's high-hurdle champ at the Bob Mathias Relays, Derek Knight came out on top. Swift, whose 13.23 at last year's meet was the fastest time in thc United Stales at lhat point in the year, bailed over the fifth hurdle. When the race was over, almost as many hurdles were on thc ground as were still standing. "That was a S6.000 spill." Fresno Slate coach Red Estes said. "The hurdlers almost always win the prize money." Another former Bulldogs star. Tanya Dooley. also struggled in front of the home crowd. Dooley, running in her first meet since reluming from ihe Indoor World Championships in Barcelona, finished second in the 200 and 400 meters. "I've been traveling so much lately I haven't had much time to train. I'm out of shape right now," Dooley said. Dooley suffered a rare defeat in the 400. losing by 2.37 seconds to Fatima Yusuf of Azusa Pacific. Yusuf *s 52.00 bettered Gail Devers' meet record by almost a second (52.56, 1987). Another athlete running at the Fresno Relays for the first lime as part of a track club, not for Fresno State, was Monica Missick. The school- record holder in the 100-meier hurdles, edged Doris Goldwin at the finish line for a wind-aided victory time of 13.19. "I've run here since I was a freshman," Missick said. "Now to win the invitational, it feels great." Like usual, the feature ev-m oi' the afternoon was the pole vault. The fans weren't disappointed. Three vaulters cleared 18 feet and Tim Bright and Dean Starkey soared 18-8 1/4, half an inch shy of Doug Fraley's meet record. "It's always nice coming to Fresno for this meet," said Bright, a three-time Olympian. "The competition is great." Mathias, who competed in the Fresno Relays (then the West Coast Relays) for Stanford from 1949-1953 and took over the annual event last year, was pleasantly surprised with the marks in the pole vault. "For this time of the season, we've had some great jumps," he said. "It was really great to see Dave Johnson clear 17 feet. That's incredible for a decathlete." The Dave of the 'Dan and Dave' Reebok advertising series which ran before the 1992 Olympic trials, competed with five other athletes in a unique triathlon. Johnson won thc 110 hurdles in 14.56, took second in the javelin at 218-11 and placed first in the pole vault at 17-3/4. The 32-year-old decathlete set the crowd aroar when he shot his fist in the air at mid-flight over the bar. Fresno State's 1.500 meters record holder Jamey Harris won the invitational mile in 4:06.27. Harris's eligibility ran out after last year's indoor season. He also grabbed 16boardsinthat 1969 tournament championship game. The entire Tar Heels team had only 25 rebounds. In 12 NCAA Tournament games. Alcindor averaged 25.3 points and 16.8 rebounds per game. His 201 rebounds is ihe second highest career total in NCAA Tournament history. Ironically, the man thai lops the list is Elvin Hayes, whom Abdul-Jabbar faced in the Final Four of the 1967 and 1968 touma- In ihe two games, UCLA won by an average of 23.5 points, and Hayes was shut down cold. Jabbar had 19 points and 18 boards in thc 1968 101-69 blowout over Houston. Hayes, meanwhile, managed only 10 points and five rebounds. The Milwaukee Bucks made Abdul- Jabbar their first pick in the 1969 draft. When he retired at thc age of 42, he was the NBA career leader in scoring, minutes played and blocked shots. He made 19 All-Star games and won six championship rings. Abdul-Jabbar scored, rebounded and blocked shots better than anyone in the game when he played. The one thing lhat separated him most from the rest of the pack, though, was his ability to win. If opposing teams collapsed Acindor (Abdul-Jabbar) in the middle, he would distribute the ball to his teammates and make them better with his presence. If teams decided to single- team Alcindor, he'd make them pay with his versatile offensive game. Whatever the situation, he found ways to win. In ihe 1973 NCAA Tournament finals, Walton hit 21 of 22 shots from the field and scored a tournament single-game high 44 points. Although the Bruins won the game by 21 points, Walton did most of his damage when Memphis State was slill in the game. Walton earned NCAA Player of thc Year and NCAA Tournament MOP honors in both his sophomore and junior seasons. Unlike Alcindor, though, the fairy tale didn't end in story-book fashion. UCLA's stretch of seven straight NCAA titles and 30 straight tournament wins came to an end in the semifinals of the 1974 tournament. North Carolina took the Bruins to double- overtime before finally ousting the kings of college basketball 80-77. Walton scored 29 points, pulled down 18 rebounds and didn't miss a minute of the 50-minutc marathon. Denny Crum told UCLA's Hall of Fame coach John Wooden that Walton was the best high school pros- peel he'd ever seen. Crum hadn't forgotten that he recruited Alcindor six years earlier. After four years on the hardwood at Pauley Pavilion, Walton may have proved Crum right. Walton suffered through injuries for most of his NBA career, but his ability to propel the performances of those around him never diminished. Abdul- Jabbar was obviously the better pro, but in college thc distinction is too hard lo make. Both dominated the college game during their respective eras and boih were proven winners. Ed O'Bannon might go down as one of the greats of college basketball, especially if hc becomes a bona ftde pro. For taking thc Bruins to the top of the NCAA for the first time in 20 years, he deserves to be mentioned among thc top performers in NCAA Tournament history. When it comes to the distinction of best NCAA Tournament players of all-lime, however, Alcindor and Walton top the list.
