Human destruction is ihc muse for a death poet and his wanton male. Slopping only to cast ihc shadow of death upon ihcir pleading victims, they dance and sing ihc lyric of evil. One person always remains alive, left standing in crimson pools of blood lo recile another horrifying chapter of Mickey and Mallory's spree of terror. Mickey and Mallory, taking whal they warn and killing for pleasure, have left a Irail of bodies on their highway of death. This country has become a smorgasbord of appetizing treats for this blood-hungry duo. Yet they are not hated by all. This couple of dementia have become the new supcrherocs for many around the country. Youths cheer and take pride in themselves for knowing lhat Mickey has slii 7 throats or that Mallory shot a bicyclist on the road just because he was in range. These pariah gods have exposed the country lo terror thai it has never bothered to open its eyes to before. Murder has become the new pastime, apd the country has bought iis season tickets. Sit back, relax and watch the heads roll. Wail a minute! Hold on! The country's not that sick, is it? Mickey and Mallory could never exist in this advanced society, could they 7 Is this country's fascination with violence producing Mickey's and Mallory's? Do murders in the news shock anymore? Is everyone just numb or oblivious? These are the questions posed to us by Oliver Stone in his newest and most controversial film. Natural Born Killers. The film tells the story of Mickey (played by Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (played by Juliette Lewis), who set out on a crime spree thai takes the country by storm, much to the pleasure of a GeraWo-like tabloid journalist played by Robert Downey Jr. Stone takes audiences on a roller coaster ride through spectacular and gripping images of murder, dementia and Irulh. Slone takes a hard look at ihc slate of the country's obsession with violence and the tabloid media's vulture-like tactics to sensationalize it. "It's aboul America's schizophrenic fascination wilh violence, how wc hale it and are drawn to it al the same lime. . . It's wild in story, and in techniques it's quite different. You ain't seen nothing yct-that's a quote from Mickey," said Slone in the June 1994 issue of Premiere maga- Harrelson gives an award winning performance as the psychotic Mickey. Lewis and Downey arc equally thrilling in their performances. This film is noi for everyone. There is more blood on ihc screen in this film than iherc was in Dratula. It's poignant and hard, bul is a chilling look at where the country may be headed, if we're not already there. The over-expression of violence in the film, which is what most people find troublesome, is a metaphor thai Slone chose to use to emphasize the violence thai surrounds every city in the country. Stone wanls audiences to be disgusted, excited, passionate and scared. These emotions cause people to think, to be moved, lo get up and shout! Truth is always hard lo lake, especially when it's al your from door every day. Inside the mind of Oliver Slone lies blood, sweat and fears.
