'•- ■'■ Sports Love for mens tennis — home court for regionals By Tfcoy Wagner StaffWriler Fresno Suite will host one of eight four-team regional qualifying tournaments of the 1995 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7. The winner of this weekend's tournament will join the seven other regional winners, as well as the top eight teams in the country, at the NCAA championships in Athens, Ga.May 13-21. "This will be the biggest tennis event ever to come to the Valley," Fresno State coach Peter Smith said. "We guarantee that some of the top collegiate teams will be playing in the tournament. It will be a great weekend of tennis." The top four teams from thc region will be playing in the NCAA Region VII Championships, with New Mexico and Fresno State expected to be the No. I and No. 2 seeds, respectively. Utah, Boise State and UTEP arc vying for the remaining two spots in Ihe tournament, vl "I see us playing New Mexico in thc championship match [on Sunday]," Smith said, "but you never know what will happen. Playing on our home courts will definitely be to our advantage." Last season, top-seeded New Mexico was expected to win the regional tournament on its home courts after winning a fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference title just a week before. But No. 2 seed Fresno State upset the Lobos, 4-3. to make a first-ever appearance in the NCAA championships. "That was, by far, the biggest win in the history of the tennis program," Smith said. "Hopefully [New Mexico) won't do that to us this year, though." Junior Bryan Juinio said he thought Fresno State has a good chance at winning the tournament playing at home. "It will be nice to have a hometown crowd there cheering us on," said Juinio, ranked No. 72 in lhc coun try in collegiate singles. This is only the second season the NCAA has had qualifying tournaments for the championships. Before the qualifying loumament, the only way Fresno State had a chance to go to the NCAAs was to win the conference. "The qualifying tournaments for the NCAAs make collegiate tennis a lol more interesting," Smith said. "Before, pretty much the same 16 teams would be in the championships. With the new system, virtually any team can make it into the big loumament." Two semi-final matches will be played at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, while the championship match will be al 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7. Last weekend, Fresno Stale lost 4-3 to New Mexico in the WAC team championships in Albuquerque. New Mexico's Tad Berkowitz scored a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 upset win over Bulldogs ace Fredrik Bergh at No. 1 singles that led the Lobos to their fifth straight WAC men's tennis title. Rodeo, from page 6 this year's rodeo comes this excerpt from a section on bareback bronc riding. "Immense physical stress is placed on the arm and back (of humans), and bareback riders face more long-term injuries, such as elbow and lower back problems, than other roughslock cowboys."
