MAY 10,1995 Lifestyle exist? ♦ Feelings about miracles, fate and angels differ. By Diane Scalice StaffWriter Ask 10 people what they consider to be a miracle, you will get 10 different responses. Rabbi Robert Seigel of the Temple Beth Israel on Maroa Avenue said "God is not a cosmic bellhop, one who intervenes and cures our ills." "God gave us rules." he said, "and a strength and calmness to face our everyday lives." Seigel does not believe in miracles of the spiritual nature, but said "birth and nature are true miracles." "After death our soul survives and stays w ith God." Pastor Donald Bent/ of the Hope Lutheran Church said "God does intervene in some cases. 1 have seen miracles in the lives of people." He has counseled several people on unexplained occurrences that he could only call a miracle. Bentz said "Angels aren'i big in my life." He admits he struggles with this concept. "It seems as though every time something cannot be explained in the Bible, it gets attributed to angels." he said. "Angels are given too much importance." Bentz said he agrees with Seigel in lhat God gives us a lot of freedom to make choices. "I am observed by my loved ones w ho have died, not for intervention, bul just because they love me and want to know what I'm doing." Parker said "We'll have a good life if we live by the rules God gave us. You know, be nice to people. People are too busy nowadays to even be kind to one another " Parker said lhat he believes in reincarnation. "When we die. in order lo spend time in heaven with God, you will have lo experience all forms of life, as every living creature on the "This is so you will have a total understanding of what humanity is." Debbie Price, 54. a Macy"| employee, recalls having had a near-fatal automobile accident three years ago. "This car came barreling through the intersection, right through a red light. I didn't have lime to react — but my mom did." "I swear I didn't turn thc steering wheel, but ihe car turned very sharply to the right. I am positive my mom saved my life." Price said she finds comfort in talking to her deceased mother and is certain her mom hears her. This incident and many other unexplained occurrences are the reasons why many people say they believe in miracles. Time magazine asked in a poll lasi month if people believed in miracles; 69 percent said they did. James Bush, 38, a heavy equipmeni operator for D.S.D. Construction, said the night his grandmother died, hc had not yet been notified and while he slept, he felt sdmeone touch his cheek. He woke up and saw his grand mother standing in the doorway. "I woke my wife up." he said. "I asked hcr if she touched my cheek, and she said 'no.'" Within an hour the phone rang, it was his mother who told him his grandmother has passed away. "I already know." he said. Bush swears it was his grandmother's way of saying goodbye to him. People's definitions of miracles, angels and fate differ. Some believe a miracle is an event that contradicts known scientific laws, a remarkable thing. For example, someone that's diagnosed with a terminal illness and for no explainable reason becomes cured. Most parents believe the births of their children arc miracles. Some believe angels are God's way of intervening, and others believe angels are their loved ones watching over them. Some believe fate is an accidental occurrence, while others believe God sent two lonely people to the same park bench to fall in love. Turning hats around turns into fashion trend for CSUF students By Michelle Henry StaffWriler Running late, being lazy and being cool are the reasons CSUF students give for wearing their hats backward. The trend seems to be a growing one as summer approaches. Liberal studies major Stephen Flach said he started wearing his hat backward when he became a ^^_^^_ lifeguard. Flach, [a hatl the same way." "You gel bored wearing it Pando. a theatre arts major, finds lhat he often wears his hat backward when he skis or works out. but also when he frequents his fraternity. "It's just the cool thing to do," Pando said. Andrew Gomez, a senior business administration major, said he started wearing his hat backward a few years ago when his hair got long. "I think I look better with it backwards. It looks geeky forwards." Gomez said. Jamie Nasrawi. an electrical engineering major, said he's been wearing his hat in reverse since little league baseball. This student with mid-back length hair said. "I wear it like this to keep the hair out of my eyes." Nasrawi doesn't like the way a hat looks forward. "It's [the hatl much better backwards." But for (hose few who enjoy owning boats from the V-drive era. finding parts to them out on the lake is very difficult. Like many owners of muscle boats, your boat is your pride and joy. You probably also know that finding help to restore it or parts to update its internal hardware is lough. If you have a classic V-drive from the '50s, '60s. '70s or newer, help is here. The following compilation is a list of companies sympathetic to your needs. They are a great source for new and hard to find parts and the best in profes- Unlimited Marine of Burlingame. Calif. has been in business since 1957. Owner John Sofflos has 35 years of experience with flat-bottom V-drivcrs. "I started out building and racing wood Mandellas." Sofflos said. "We also have access to a lot of old Hullcraft and Halebrand parts," Sofflos said. Hc also manufactures a bolt-on conversion kit lhat replaces a jet drive with a propeller drive.
