CSUF philosophy department presents series, focuses on religion, skepticism After the cancellation of the Vintage Day's popular Air Guitar show, students watched the show indoors Marlene Bryant INSIGHT "You can't simply buy into religious claims," said Dr. Donald N. Blakeley, associate professor of philosophy. Blakeley will address Skepticism and Religions of the World as the final part of the philosophy department colloquium series on May 9 at 7 p. m. in Music Building, room 104. Admission is free. The topic of Skepticism and Religions of the World will attempt to take into account interrcligious dialogue. The fact that there are many religions in the world is now something that is inescapable. "Religions are making claims about how we ought to understand things. The claims all seem to be different," Blakeley said. There are thousands of religions in the world. Many university and college courses say that there are at least eight or nine major religions in the world. According to Blakeley, various religious traditions make claims about how people should view the world. How do you make an assessment of religious claims? Can they all equally be true? "It raises a question about the nature of the knowledge existing within the contentof various traditions. My com ments will deal with reflections upon people working in the field of comparative religions," he said. Ideas arc being subjected to critical review in many areas. Anthropologists, archaeologists and linguists offer an understanding of the concepts surrounding the formation of societies and how meaning occurs within these social networks. "Each of these considerations has a bearing upon how you read, understand and assess the particular claims made within religious traditions," he said. Blakeley commented that if people cannot read into religious claims dircclly, then they cannot buy into them in a straight-forward way. Such claims require a skeptical interpretation. "The interpretation is skeptical in a sense that it puts you into a position where you can' t simply concede what is being maintained on the basis of the authority of the tradition itself," Blakcly said. "Reflection is skeptical, even though the knowledge is acceptable and legitimate." According to Blakeley, this colloquium is an excellent opportunity for people taking philosophy classes or for the general public, who have an interest in the area, o hear a presentation on a particular topic. The speaker will examine an issue and men offer the audience a chance to respond. 'These lectures arc supplementary to the students' education and they offer a way for faculty to express their own interests in particular areas. Programs like mis support faculty interest and inform students of new and different things going on," Blakeley said. The colloquium schedule for this semester consisted of "Thecla and Mark Against the Household Codes." by Dr. Robert Maldonado, CSUF professor, and "Law and Love," by Newton Garvcr, Suny, Buffalo and CSU, San Diego. Scott Goldsmith INSIGHT The big event of Vintage Days finally arrived, Air Guitar. The anticipation was high, the acts were ready, and the bands involved in Battle of the Bands were warming up. And it was raining. Soon the weather got worse, the lights went out. the speakers almost blew and Air Guitar 1994 was cancelled — at least temporary. "If 1 would have paid ten bucks I would have been mad." said senior Scott Cross. "As far as Air Guitar goes it was really hard to concentrate on the bands while trying to stay warm and dry." Not only was it raining and Air Guitar temporarily cancelled, some students found other tilings to complain about. For instance, students felt the lighting during Air Guitar made it really difficult to sec the bands. The lighting was placed directly behind the bands causing the band members to be virtually invisible. John Hcbcrt, who was in charge of the Air Guitar bands during Vintage Days, said, "I didn't know the lighting was going to be like that." Due to the weather, many students didn' t even go, but for those who paid S10 to sec Air Guitar, not going wasn't an option. "1 still went because 1 paid. The rain wasn't that bad until about the second act when it started to pour. Everybody left and those who stayed were disappointed," Esther Tamondong said. After the third act, Heben grabbed the microphone and to everyone's disappointment, AirGuiiar was cancelled, then not cancelled as the comedian started lo play a song, then finally in the middle of his song, he announced that it was cancelled again The crowd was upset yelling obscenities along with "give us our money back". The bad news is no one will get their money back, the good news was that two free showings of Air Guitar took place in the Satellite Student Union on Thursday, April 28. This time the event was held indoors. In the past, the weather hadn't been a problem for Vintage Days or Air Guitar. However, the fact is mother nature can't be changed and CSUF must be prepared. Those in charge should have moved the speakers farther away out of the rain. The people in attendance would have watched the show without lights. but without speakers, there is nothing one can do.
