March 23,1994 P«g< 9 Athletes try for draft, play waiting game By Kelley Scott Hadi YazdanPanah/INSIGHT Pitcher Tommy Minor, a key to the Bulldogs success this season, led Fresno State to a 10-1 victory over the University of Maine Black Bears Tuesday night at the Pepsi - Johnny Quick Classic at Beiden field. Fresno State lost to Washington State, 7—4, in the championship game Saturday night. StaffWriter One of lhc biggest dreams of any boy is io make il into professional sports. This dream may be coming irue for a few of Fresno Stale's finest. Last Tuesday, Quarterback Trent Dilfer strutted his stuff in front of 100 scouls,coaches,playcrs, media people and screaming fans. Along with Dilfer were some of lhe eligible men for thc draft that helped him get to where hc ing Quarterback Trent Dilfer, people lend to forget the ones around him that got him there. It takes more than one person to achieve the kind of season thc Fresno Slate football team accomplished. Without good receivers, running backs.or linemen,a quarterback is worthless. "It's a big day in Fresno State football obviously when you get 50 NFL people here," said Jim Sweeney, FSU head coach. Dilfer is expected to go in ihc first round of thc draft but there have been no predictions made about any of the other NFL hopefuls lhat went through preliminary auditions for lhc bic-wies. Mosi of lhe NFL staff expected they wouldn't get a chance at Dilfer but wanted to sec him perform in person anyway. "I wanted io meet him to sec what kind of young fella hc is. Thc chance of us having any chance at him is not real strong, but still you never know what happens down thc line," said Darrcl Mouse Davis, offensive coach for the Atlanta Falcons. Those going through scouting drills alongside Dilfer were Anthony Daigle, tailback; Malcolm Seabron, receiver; Lee Harris, receiver; Tydus Winans, receiver; Ron Collins, offensive tackle; Kenny Hall, offensive tackle; James Burton, corncrback; Tommy Jones, corncrback; Sam Watson, strong safety; and Ron Rivers, running back. Even though there hasn 'i been a lot of hype over thc other FSU prospects for the draft, experts are positive of their NFL potential. On Saturday nighl, lhe Bulldogs and Cougars played in the final game of die tournament lodecidcthecham- pion. Wiih Tommy Minor, ihc Bulldog's lop pitcher on ihc mound, Fresno Stale hoped to win the Classic for thc firsl time since 1989. ■ However, in a game which included five Bulldog errors, ihc Cougars look lhc Championship, defeating Fresno Slate 7-4 . Gixxldefense and laic inningcome- backs had been the Bulldogs trademark in lhc tournament, bul against the Cougcrs, Fresno Stale made cosily errors and could muster no comeback. Thc Cougars finished lhe tournament at iS-O.giving Head Coach Bobo Brayton the Classic Title in his 33rd and last year of coaching. Thc Bulldogs reached thc championship game by winning five straight games, including an 8-3 win in lhc first game over I6ih ranked Kentucky. The Bulldogs also defeated Maine, Illinois State, Nebraska and Nevada. Some of thc lop players visiting Fresno in the loumameni were All- Americans Troy Brohawn of Nebraska and Antonio Fernandez of New Mexico. Watching him wrestle is like watching a small tornado lift an oak tree and tic il into a knot. On the mat hc looks like a surreal - and drives them into the mat. Thc skin on their checks and foreheads push in contradictory directions. Thc fans grimace, sorry for thc poor soul thai challenges Abas. Thc opponents' eyes have the pleading look of a World Wrestling Federation bad guy who wants to pound lhc mat three times to end the match, but can'l free his hands. Hc doesn't have to wait long, though; the match is soon over. and Abas is victorious. Abas, the 142-pound All- American, has been thrashing opponents all season long. The reward wasasecondplace finish at thc NCAA National Wrestling Tournament. Abas went into thc tournament wiih a 32-3 record and was seeded second. H i s opponent for the final match Alan Fried of Oklahoma State, who was seeded first in the competition. Fresno Slate wrestling head coach Dennis DeLiddo said Abas was thc one wrestler who could beat Fried. Unfortunately Abas was defeated. But thc loss is overshadowed by the impressive statistics compiled over the span of his career at Fresno State.
