Thc comedy's action revolves around a day when the Pope visited New York in 1965 and lhc 24-hour period lhat follows. Artie (Scoil Tukloff) is a zoo- kecper and wanna-bc composer who wife Bananas (Mcndy Garcia), who sometimes imagines shc isa dog, lives in fear of Artie's sending hcr lo lhc looncy bin, which hc calls lhc House of Blue Leaves. "Who arc lhc crazy people in ihc world?" McKinlcy asked. All ihcchar- acicrs behave in a lunatic fashion, while Bananas, in comparison, acts rclaiivcly sane. Artie and Bananas have a son named Ronnie (Paul Bergman), who warns io fulfill his dream of noioriciy by blowing up ihc Pope wiih a bomb. Hc has gone AWOL from basic training lo come home to achieve this. In lhe same apartment complex, Anie has a mistress named Bunny (Sharilyn Saxton) who dreams of be- the play at CSUF once before in 1973. coming a star in Hollywood. Other However, McKinlcy said then ii was characters in lhe play include three considered a contemporary piece— nuns (Amy Dunham, Moya Furlow now it is a reflection on a period of and Tiffany Saltzman), bigshot film American history, producer Billy (Francis McBride) and "It's interesting for mc to look back The House of Blue Leaves Mardt 11-12 and 16-19 at 8 p.m. March 13 and 20 at 2 p. m. "(Thc play) is also very muchaboul our society's fascination wiih lhc famous and how wc have a tendency lo make siars oul of people. For example, in thc play, people like thc Pope and Bob Hope are given equal star status," said McKinley. The Theatre Department produced now and sec how it has become a period piece—u has thc '60s mentality," McKinlcy said. Even more interesting since McKinlcy acted in a high school production of the play at Lincoln H.S. in Stockton when shc was 17 years old. Shc played the part of Bunny, Aruc's mistress. "To have compassion for these characters, you need to have experienced the struggle and disappointment of trying to achieve dreams," McKinlcy said. Shc feels thai this version and the actors that shc is directing bring much more maturity and performance expertise to lhc production than when hcr high school performed it. Thc cast has been in rehearsals five nights a week for the last five weeks. "The House of Blue Leaves," written in ihc late 1960s by playwright John Guarc, received the New Drama Critics Circle Award in 1971. Thc play's 1986 Broadway revival rein an introduction to the play that appc.ircd in thc txxik "Three Exposures," Guare gives his interpretation of what thc essence of ihc play is: "Why do my dreams, which should be lhc best pari of mc, why do my dreams.my wants, constantly humiliate mc? I guess that's whal this play is about more than anything else: humiliation. Everyone in lhc play iscon- siantly being humiliated by their dreams, their loves, their wants, their best parts. I think avoiding humiliation is ihc core of tragedy and comedy and probably of our lives." The play opens ihis Friday nighl in the John Wright Thcairc of lhc Speech Arts Building.
