Karen Toth/INSIGHT By using university services such as CSUF's University Catering and the horticulture department, a bride-to-be can save money. Bridal veil and dress on front page modeled by Stephanie Gosch courtesy of Madeleine's Wedding World. By C. Ashley Linden StaffWriter Here comes thc bride, but not the bill. That's whal Susan Trexlcr thought as she played the role of ihe frugal fiancee, cutting comers to make her dream wedding come true. Had Trcxler, a 23-year-old manicurist and high school drop-out. attended CSUF, shc could have saved hundreds of dollars utilizing university resources available for up and coming brides. Yviui tne average wcaaing ranging between $8,000 and $15,000, many couples are turning to alternate means, pinching pennies to make ends meet as the prices of celebrating marriage soar. For university alumni, staff, and students, wedding bliss celebrated on campus may be the savior of their drained life savings. "Thc wedding reception is probably the single most expensive party a couple will host in their life," said Janet Beardcn, owner of Dreams Unlimited, a Tacoma, Wash., and Merced- based bridal consulting firm. Wiih this in mind, CSUF'S University Catering steps in and coordinates wedding receptions as one of their ma"ny services to those associa led with Ihe university. Wearing the titles of assistant catering manager and reception coordinator, Deborah Keams sees that lhc bride receives thai best service and food for her money. "University catering is more labor intensive wilh wedding receptions, offering better service without incurring the additional labor costs to the bride and groom," Reams said. Keams noted that the traditional cake fee of S2-S3 per person is waived and is a service of University Catering. The real savings, however, comes from free use of the Residence Dining Hall for receptions up to 400, and lhc use of the West Cafe, Main Cafe and thc University Pub for receptions up to 250. Typically, room charges can run in excess of 51,500 including deposits for large reception sites. As beautiful as the bride, so are the flowers that adorn the wedding and reception sites. With a visit to Dana Horton, thc university's horticulturist and floral designer, couples can hardly resist reserving her creations for their wedding day. Horton, with the help of four students, creates floral arrangements at the University Floral Lab. WiUi Horton's guidance and expertise, as many as three to four weddings a weekend are graced by the university's lalented designers. "Wc offer those associated with the university a quality service without the additional costs of lhe middleman," Horton said. A wedding reception is never com plcte without a photographer capturing lhai Kodak moment. Yet with photographers fees soaring ovei S1,000 for wedding memories, young brides and grooms may end up relying on Uncle Joe's polaroids. The rescue from soaring photographer fees rests in the hands of trained student photographers in the journalism department. A nominal fee, price of lhc fi lm and processing, is often lhe key to getting professional results from sludent photographers. Student photographers arc not the only ones investing their time and talent for this once in a lifetime event. Brides and grooms may also turn to the music department for referrals for student chamber groups that will play ai receptions around the area. Comparative pricing of wedding services become second nature as the eager couple nears lhc wedding date. But for studenls investing S1,648 a year for tuition, ihc price of a one night feast may far exceed the expenses of college. For ihosc looking lo hold a wedding reception for 250 friends and relatives, local banquet facilities will play host for the evening. However, banquet service does not come cheap to brides and grooms looking to stretch dollars. The average reception for 250 at a local banquet facility runs S6.987 — $415 more ihan tuition for four years at CSUF.
