Moraga dislikes the spotlight of the theater and prefers to be the brains behind the screen or thc eyes watching from ihc back row of the auditorium. However, Moraga docs enjoy sharing and reading her poetry. Her most poignant work relating to lhe San Joaquin Valley is "Heroes andSaints/'publishcdin 1993, which is based on the incident in the valley town of McFarland where numerous accounts of cancer were reported. StaffWriter "Although Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated widely, lhc reality in Northern Ireland is grim for most Irish people. A teacher who recently visited Northern Ireland described it as a war zone. The Irish still live wilh the pain of discrimination by the English government to this day."—CSUF senior JoAnnc Nowlan. "War zone" aptly describes thc tension in the movie "In mv iNumcot thc Father," based on lhe irue slory of Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis). Conlon and three of his friends were arrested and falsely convicted of bombing a pub in Guilford, England. "The Guilford Four," as Ihcy were known, spent 15 years in prison foracrimc the British government knew they hadn't committed. Thc movicsians with acon- froniation in Belfast, Ireland, between the Irish Republican Army and soldiers, snowing Ihe horror of daily life for lhe Irish people. What touched me most was thc reactions of the children witnessing the violence. As tanks moved through the streets and men in riot gear beat citizens with clubs, children watched. Some had fear in their eyes, some viewed it as a game, joining lhe excitement by throwing bricks and stones at the armored men. Thc biggest tragedy of any "war" is thc impact it has on the lives of the children of thc society, scarring ihcm irreparably forever. Conlon's parents send him io England to live with his aunt, hoping to keep him from thc violence of his homeland. Upon arrival, instead of staying with his aunt, hc moves into a house occupied by hippies. Unfortunately for him and his friends, it's a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Four troublemaking Irish young people make convenient scapegoats for the police after the pub is bombed. These police have mastered their humiliation and torture techniques. They arrive in lhe middle of thc night in tanks, arrest Conlon and keep a blanket over his head until they arrive back at the police headquarters. For the next week, the police strip the prisoners' every shred of dignity. Finally, they beat thc "Guilford Four" iniosigning con- lamer Guiseppc (Peter l'( '•ilethwaitejcomcs to England lo get his son out of jail, bul thc police arrest everyone ai thc ; irt's house, including Guiseppc, for lhe trumped-up crime of being "accessories." A trial follows, and lhc "Guilford Four"as well asConlon's family members, arc all sentenced to prison. Emma Thompson plays the Conlons' lawyer Gareth Pierce. She eventually succeeds in clearing all thepeoplc who were wrongly convicted. They were freed on May 19,1993. Thc film successfully develops two conflicts — thc conflict between lhc IRA and the British govemmenl and the conflict between Conlon and his father. The father and son become cell-males in prison. Over the years, the younger Conlon grows from a thieving, irresponsible young man who doesn't respect anyone, including himself, intoa man determined toclear the name of his father. "In the Name of the Father" is based on a true story. The actors' performances arc very believable, especially in the devclopmcni of the relationship between Conlon and his father. Amnesty International fights for human rights By Lisa Dorman-Stubbs StaffWriter "In the Name of the Father" focused on Gerry Conlon, whose human rights were violated by the English government. Today, in countries around thc world, people continue to be wrongly imprisoned, tortured and killed for their beliefs. The world cried out for thc release of Nelson Mandela, a political prisoner of thc South African apartheid government. But how many other people are affected by violations of their human rights that the public never hears about? Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people working together to protect human rights. AI works for: ♦ Thc release of prisoners of conscience — men, women and children imprisoned for ihcir beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origin, language or religion, provided they have neither used nor advocated violence. • Fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners. ♦ An end to torture and executions in all cases. Efforts include massive letter writing campaigns to government officials and education-spreading the word on human rights.
