Page 6. FEATURES Hye Sharzhoom September 1989 ASO Corner President welcome students back By Jacqueline Sislian ASO President Welcome back! Hope everyone is looking forward to an exciting semester with the CSUF Armenian Students Oragnization. The group has already started the semester off with two major events. The first was a picnic held in early September at O'Neil park on campus. Twenty-five new and old members were in attendance. All who attended enjoyed talking, eating submarine, sandwiches, and playing tavloo. The next event was our biggest fundraiser: It was the International Food Expo (formerly Passport Fresno) held September 22-24 in me Fulton Mall. A shish-kebob plate mat included salad and peda bread was sold to the public. The weekend was a great way to meet new friends and help out the club. Aiso, during the summer the organization entered two volleyball teams in the Western Armenian Athletic Association's Summer Games. The Hye Spikers" made up the men's 1989-90 ASO Officers First Armenian Country Club Opens in Fresno By Satenig Ohannessian Staff Writer The newest accomplishment by Armenians in the Central Valley is the purchasing of the first Armenian country club. The Armenian Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization, opened the ACF Sunnyside Community Center on June 18,1989. The ACF Center, located at 5707 E. Balch Ave. in Fresno, is open to all Armenians. "The ACF Sunnyside Community Center was brought about by years and years of dreaming" said Yerevan Ohannessian, general manager of the ACF Center and a CSUF Business Administration graduate. He added, "When the Armenians first came into the valley, they were highly discriminated against and one of these discriminations was that Armenians couldn't enter country cluos. Through the Indus triousncss of the Armenians, we have today the ACF Sunnyside Community Center." The ACF Center has a wide variety of facilities to offer. The country club, totaling five acres, has a clubhouse, snackbar, lounge area, bar, three swimming pools, an aerobics room, weight room, and six tennis courts. A tanning bed, men's and women's saunas, a masseuse for your daily stress, and a day care are also available. The ACF Sunnyside Community Center has special activities too. These activities include Armenian dance lessons by the Arax Dancers of Fresno, water aerobics, Monday night football, Saturday afternoon World Cup soccer, and even scuba diving lessons. "This has been a reality where any Armenian can come and participate in activities ranging from playing tavloo with other Armenians to learning the Armenian language," said Ohannessian. Christina Tusan, a club member, really enjoys the center. "I joined because they have really nice facilities and I think it's a good opportunity to learn more about my Armenian culture." ASO brings home trophies By Paulette Kasparian Editor Two trophies were claimed by the California State University, Fresno Armenian Students Organization teams that entered the 21st annual Armenian Summer Games sponsored by the Western Armenian Athletic Association. A third place finish was captured by the ASO Hye Spikers in men's volleyball action. Karney Mekhitarian led the team with his serving power throughout the double elimination tournament held on the CSUF campus in mid-June. This earned Mekhitarian a new WAAA two- game match serving record along with a place on the 1989 WAAA all tournament team. The ASO girls also formed themselves into a team, the Hye Delights. The Hye Delights entered both the WAAA women's volleyball tournament and ran in the 400 meter relay during the track and field portion of the Summer Games. It was this women's relay that brought home another third place finish for the ASO group. Both ASO teams were sponsored by Hye Quality Bakery of Fresno. The WAAA Summer Games, formerly the Armenian Olympics, is a tournament open to Armenians of any church or political affiliation. The 1990 Summer Games is scheduled to once again be held in mid- June at CSUF. team which took third place in the tournament. The women's team, known as the "Hye Delights," not only participated in the volleyball portion of the tournament, but they also ran in the 400 meter relay .where they captrued third place. The uniforms that the teams wore were donated by the Hye Quality Bakery of Fresno. Rounding out the end of last semester, the ASO sponsored an "End of Semester Banquet" which was held at Zaven's Universal Gourmet restaurant here in Fresno. During the banquet, elections of 1989-90 ASO officers were held with the results as follows: president, Jacqueline Sislian; vice-president, Scott Asmar; secretary, Satenig Ohannessian; treasurer, Ara Kebabjian; and historian, Deborah Garabedian. The Armenian Students Organization is a very active and fun club on campus. Public enjoys Shish Kebob By Paulette Kasparian Editor The sun was beating through the trees onto the pavement as thousands of people, with forks in their hands, were hastily scrambling from booth to booth anxious to taste a little international cuisine. The scene just described was that of the annual Fresno International Food Exposition held September 22-24, on the downtown Fulton Mall. The weekend offers a way for the various ethnic groups in the Central Valley to gather, sharing with the public their customs, traditions and famous dishes. The CSUF Armenian Students Organization took up one of the four outdoor booths in the Armenia section of the Food Exposition. The ASO prepared close to 175 lbs. of shish kebob and served it with peda bread and salad to the public. Hundreds of people purchased the $4 plate and ate it under a canopy provided by the group. Many ASO members took shifts working in the boom for the three-day event. "Young Armenian youths working together as one is a good experience for working together in the future," said Jon Philip Maroot, an ASO member.
