Haig Berberian was born in Armenia, saw his father and brother killed in the Turkish massacres, but fortunately he, at the age of 17, and the rest of his family escaped the Genocide to arrive in the United States in the year 1923. Here he met his wife the former Isabel Baker, a first generation Armenian American. They moved to Modesto, California in 1943 and together established a very successful nut processing business. This business eventually evolved into the world's largest independent walnut shelling plant and was sold to Pet, Inc. in 1972. Mr. Berberian's accomplishment was achieved with only the education he received in a school established by missionaries in his native Armenia and a few months of night school in the United States learning the English language." "Haig Berberian was once asked what business or profession he would follow if he could do it over again. He answered by saying, "I would be a teacher. It seems to me that would be the most gratifying profession. The world depends on teachers. Because of his respect for the teaching profession and higher education, we feel he would have thoroughly approved of the establishment of this Chair. Today we pay tribute to his memory and honor the woman who worked at his side for many years, Isabel Baker Berberian." "An example of the lessons we were taught by our parents was one of sharing. Now many generous people join us in making this contribution as a method of fulfilling our obligation to our ancestors Books Donated to Armenian Studies Program and to our community. The Armenian people have come from centuries of tradition. The Haig and Isabel Berberian Chair of Armenian Studies will help preserve and propagate the traditions of Armenian culture, language, and heritage.
