CA RECEIVES MANY JAPANESE GOODS An assorted shipment of Japanese recreational ar- ticles, which arrived with the consolatory goods from Japan through the courtesy of the International Com- mittee of Red Cross in Gen- eva,Switzerland, have been received here by the com- munity activities division, according to Taka Aratani of the CA section. These articles have been displayed at the Co-op can- teen. Including in the ship- ment are 7 sets of goh-ishi, 4 gohban, 7 sets of shogi- koma,- 1 harmonica, 2 fuye and 4 shaku-hachi. The CA division intends to donate a set of goh and shogi to the center hos- pital isolation ward and the remaining sets will be distributed to the 8G and 8K goh and shogi centers. A number of Japanese musical instruments was damaged, but any person interested in practicing on the shaku-hachi may do so by inquiring at the 8F CA office. The remaining instruments will be used in the weekly block talent shows. “AA” STARS EKE PREPSTERS 49-45, IN BENEFIT GAME Pulling themselves to- gether in the final waning minutes of the struggle, the overconfident local “AA" All-Stars squeezed thru with a 49-45 triumph over the hard-fighting Ama- che hi varsity cagers in the second game of the high school benefit basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at the gym. The game started with a bang, as the All-Stars un- corked a neat tip-off play which found John Kashiwabara driving under the bucket to dump a lay-up shot for the initial score. A few minutes later,the prepsters took the lead, 5-4, on Jun Furuno's charity toss and Jack Hoshizu’s two baskets, but Kashiwabara and Shimizu collaborated to push the All-Stars in front at the end of first quarter, 13-9. ''AA” aggregation clung to their lead and held a 21-18 advantage at half time. In the third stanza, the prepsters made their greatest challenge for an upset win by deadlocking the score 21-all on Goi's field goal and Okamura's gratis throw, but Chick Furuye's hook shot put the All-Stars back into the lead. Then, prepsters' big Hank Shimada got “hot" and dumped " three consecutive buckets with Hoshizu hit- ting two more ,Goi and Oka- mura coming thru with one each. At the end of the hectic third quarter, the high school quintet was on the road to victory with an 8-point lead, 36-28. Midway in the last quar- ter, the All-Stars closed the gap to 41-38,but prep- ster Goi hit another bucket, and back came All-Star Hama- da making two charity tosses. With Hoshizu shoving in an- other score, the prepsters held a 45-40 lead with four minutes to go. Then Aki Watanabe cut loose with a two-bucket barrage and with Kashiwabara adding another point on the high school cagers too many time outs, the All-Stars knotted the count at 45-all. Veteran Tosh Shimizu hit a long bucket to put the All-Star's ahead, 47-45, with a minute and half left. The high school basketeers tried des- perately to tie the score, but Alfred Kato shoved in the clincher with five seconds remaining in the game . John Kashiwabara was the high scorer for the evening with 14, Shimizu bagging 10, and Watanabe 9. Tosh Okamura and Jack Hoshizu with 11 digits apiece shared scoring honors for losers. PIONEER Sports April 8, 1944 Page 7 SEPOL GIRLS NAB 9TH STRAIGHT WIN; BEAT GRANADA HIGH,41-27 A mache's championship firls basketball quintet, the Ramblin' Ramblerettes, chalked up their ninth con- secutive victory as they knocked over their cross- town rivals, the Granada high school cagerettes for the second time this season, 41-27, in the first game of Tuesday night's benefit casaba doubleheader at the local gym. The Amache las- sies also copped their first game with the Granadans two months ago on the lat- ters’ home floor, 31-20. Ramblerettes' Chizu Kanda dumped in the first bucket, but the visitors grabbed the lead with two straight field goals and held a 8-6 advantage at the end of the first stanza. The second canto found the Ramblerettes' backcourt trio of Kubochi- Yokoyama-Onomiya putting a stop sign on the visitors while Hamamoto-Kanda-Sugi- yama scoring combination registered field goals con- sistently to give the locals an 18-12 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the visitors' Corky Tyner and Marjorie Parsley potted sensational long shots to put them back into the game for a short time, but Al Kato's forward wall,es- pecially Norma Hamamoto and Chizu Kanda, opened up with a barrage of field goals. The last canto saw the Ramblerettes continue to stretch their lead and win going away with a 14- point margin. Hamamoto and Kanda scored 17 and 16 points respectively for the winners while for the Granadans, Tyner and Parsely were high with 12 and 11 digits each. Summary: AMACHE (41) Hamamoto 17, Kanda 16, E.
