41 MORE CALLED FOR TUESDAY’S “PHYSICAL” Fifth March pre-induc- tion physical examination call for local selective service registrants has been announced and those listed are scheduled to leave Tuesday morning for Denver,disclosed Walter J. Knodel, center selective service officer,yesterday. This call lists 41 Amache- ans registered with various California draft boards. Considerable difficulty has been encountered thus far in informing the Lamar draft officials of the number of men who are to respond on indicated dates, states Knodel. Therefore, these holding notices to report on Mar. 28 are re- quested to sign up with Harlow Tomlinson, chief of internal security, by 9 o’- clock Monday morning. Jerome is not expected to be represented since that center is to be closed in June. The Federation of Center Business Enterprise was formed last November for a trial period of six months which expires April 30. PROJECT ATTORNEY HORN “LOANED” TO HEART MT. Donald T. Horn, project attorney, left here Thurs- day for the Heart Mountain relocation center to handle pressing legal evacuee and administrative problems, according to James G.Lind- ley, project director. Horn will temporarily take over the duties of the former project attorney who passed away two weeks ago. 49 DRAFT REGISTRANTS LEFT THURSDAY FOR ARMY “EXAM” This month's fourth contingent of 49 center draft Registrants departed early Thursday morning from Lamar to take their pre-induction physical examination in Denver. The original call listed 64 selectees but various deletions brought about the reduction, stated Walter J. Knodel, local selective service officer, Thursday. Complete breakdown of the list shows: (1) report- Eed to call-49; (2) relo- cated-7, (3) transferred-- 1 (Crystal City), (4) hos- pitalized-1,(5)rejected- 1,(6)failed to report-5. Col. Harrison A.Gerhardt, executive to the assistant secretary of war, explained the policy of the War Department in segregation of Japanese Americans in a single unit. "The present assignment of Japanese-American induc- tees is very often interpreted as a segregation policy on the part of the War Department," he said. "This is because the rea- son for the use of Japanese Americans in a single unit is not clearly understood. There is an urgent present and future need for replace- ments for the 100th batta- lion and 442nd combat team. In order to fill this need, it is necessary to assign , inductees for training for these units. "Secondly, inasmuch as the 'War Department fears -continued on page 6--- BLOCK PERSONNEL DIRECTOR JOBS TO BE ELIMINATED By the end of this month, the positions of the 29 block personnel directors will be completely elimi- nated as the Washington WRA headquarters would not ap- prove of them, stated Henry F. Halliday, assistant pro- Jet director, this week. The functions delegated to the block personnel direc- tors are to be assumed by the block managers and their clerks. KOEN RANCH MESS HALL TO RE-OPEN EARLY NEXT MONTH The Koen ranch mess hall will re-open early in April, announce the mess division today, with the same set-up and regulations applied in the workers’ mess hall. Kazuchi Soda, a former XY ranch hand, was appointed chief stew- ard. With spring planting and plowing time “knockin',” the operation of this farm mess will simplify and aid all farm activities tre- mendously.
