Granada PIONEER Vol. II, No. 36 Wednesday March 8, 1944 Amache, Colorado SWEDISH COUNTESS CENTER VISITOR DURING WEEK-END Swedish Countess Hugo Cedegren, accompanied -by Mrs. Evelyn Hersey, assis- tant commissioner of the immigration and naturaliza- tion office, and Mrs. Ruth Woodsmall, secretary of the world’s YWCA, visited Amache during the week-end, according to Sara A.Brown, assistant counselor, Mon- day. For Countess Cedegren and Mrs. Woodsmall, it was their initial visit to a relocation center. Both were interested in Amache from an international stand- point. The distinguished visi- tors were escorted by W. Ray Johnson,acting project director. DENVER BOUND CALIFORNIA BOARDS CALL 34 NISEI FOR PHYSICAL Of this month's first contingent of 42 Amache inductees registered with California selective ser- vice boards, 34 have left Lamar early this morning For Denver to take their pre- induction physical exami- nations, according to Wal- ter J. Knodel, center se- lective service officer. Seven have relocated since the original list was compiled and consequently will re- port to his nearest res- pective selective(service board. Shigeru Lloyd Mizu- kami, 9K-3C, was excused due to physical disqualify- cation. Two members of the pre- sent group, Henry Hisao Okimoto and Yamato Cain Yamasaki, have volunteered for training at Camp Savage. Kazufumi Kojo, 7K-2F; --continued on page 5- PRE-INDUCTEES MUST SIGN UP PRIOR TO DEPARTURE DATE Local nisei residents, when notified of their pre- induction physical exami- nation for the following dates-Mar. 15 and 22, are requested to register their names with Harlow Tomlin- son; chief of internal se- curity, by noon Mar. 14 and by noon Mar.21 respec- tively, stated Walter Knodel, selective service officer. This requirement is necessary to facilitate the making of arrangements for transportatiom, compil- ing final list of inductees, lunches and other services. All information in regards to selective service may be obtained by contacting Knodel at his office. JOINT RESOLUTION TO ASK NISEI RIGHTS RESTORATION A far-reaching joint resolution was passed Thurs- day by the local Blue Star Mothers and the Women's Federation to present a petition to the proper govern- ment officials in Washington pleading for the restor- ation of nisei citizenship rights, according to Mrs. Shizuko Kamiya, president of the Women's Federation, Monday. Although the petition, if granted, may affect all nisei, it was "said the joint resolution was passed especially in behalf of the boys already in service and for those who will en- ter the armed services in the future. KaySugahara was appoint ed to formulate the petition expressing the wishes con- tained in the joint resolu- tion. COURSE ON BRAILLE SYSTEM MAY BE OFFERED AMACHEANS Local residents with impaired vision or who are totally blind will be happy to hear that Miss Margaret Bland of the state depart- ment of public welfare's service division for the blind is scheduled to ar- rive here Friday with the intention of providing a Braille training course, according to Sara A.Brown, assistant counselor. Miss Bland will be ca- pably assisted by Miss Aiko Kuroki, who has a thorough knowledge of Braille, and is a recent Amache high school graduate, in what- ever program the project proposes to undertake. During her visit, Miss Bland will consult with the administration,school, medical and welfare section officials.
