March 8, 1944________________________PIONEER____________________Page 3 BADMINTON AT GYM CANCELLED Badminton, originally scheduled for this evening and tomorrow night at the high school gym, has been postponed,according to the community activities divi- sion, Tuesday. Shortage of workers forced the can- cellation of this proposed activity this week. ICKES REPORTS 402 NISEI ANSWER ARMY PHYSICAL WASHINGTON, March 2-- Secretary of Interior Har- old L. Ickes said today that 402 Japanese Americans from 10 internment centers have been drafted by selec- tive service and of this number, only seven refused to report for induction. Five of the delinquents were at Granada, Colo., while the remaining two are from Minidoka, Ida. Five of the seven are now under arrest in Denver, he said, and the others are being sought. Ickes added that several thousand other internees are awa i t- ing calls for service. All told, he said,there has been "no trouble at all" with the draftees since their induction start- ed on Jan. 21. HIGH TRIBUTE PAID TO NISEI FIGHTING AT SALERNO FRONT WINONA,Minn .-High trib- ute to the valor and fight- ing qualities of Hawaiian-. Japanese troops who train- ed at Camp McCoy was paid by Sgt.Douglas D.Drysdale, now home in Winona after 52 air missions in the Med- iterranean area over enemy territory. "Jerry was waiting for us at Salerno," he said. "As we flew at low levels over the landing, we could see machine guns of the enemy cutting down t h e troops as they came ashore. "Hawaiian troops held the beachhead,however, and pushed inland. I learned later one company, which took a ridge under cross- fire of German artillery, held it two and a half days until reinforcements ar- rived. AGENT HERE TO RECRUIT 100 MEN FOR RAILROAD WORK Immediate call for 100 men to work for the Atchi- son, Topeka and Santa Ee Railway Co,, has been re- ceived by the local relo- cation office,stated Mario Vecchio,relocation advisor, Tuesday. According to Vecchio the workers will be paid 60 cents an hour and time-and- half for overtime, and the evacuee employees will en- joy all privileges under the labor agreements.Board and room will be $1.25 a day, with Japanese cooks and boarding crew. All transportation and meals will be furnished by the company. CHILDREN TO SEE "TURF BOY” Remember kids,the free movies this Saturday at Terry Hall features "Turf Boy," a human-interest story of a group of people risking all their possession on a bro- ken-down race horse. The first show for those posses- sing orange tickets will start at 9 o'clock in the morn- ing and the afternoon show for blue ticket holders is at 2 o'clock. HUBBUB OVER THREE NISEI HASHED OUT AMICABLY IN ILLINOIS LINCOLN, Ill., Feb. 29- Three Japanese Americans returned to their jobs at the local hatchery today after a discussion on the matter by a group of inter- ested citizens, represent- tative of the hatchery and Relocation Officer Mil- ton C. Guether of the WRA, last evening. Guether explained to the group that these boys are American-born citizens and that since Feb. 1, they are subject to the draft and are being reclassified by their local boards. He further explained that more then 22,000 have been relocated and to date there has not been any act of sabotage reported. Following these explan- ations, Fay Miller, a local resident, expre s sed the general sentiment of the town in these words: "We are in this war to- gether.
