February 5, 1944__________________PIONEER_______________Page 7 SPORTS Memos By Jim Otsuki HIGH SCORER No doubt Spurs Teru Mi- yano's Amache scoring re- cord of 34 points tallied against the Manjiettes is certainly something to shoot a t ...But glancing through a recent issue of the Manzanar Free Press, we came across a very in- teresting high scoring item. ...A certain Toru Shimizu, performing for the Buc Babes in the Manzanar Aye league, shoved in 86 points last year in his team's 160 to 20 win. That's an average of one field goal a minute!! . .. Brudder that's scoring!! CAGE TOURNEY The Recreation Depart- ment is planning to hold a center-wide basketball tournament soon after the league games are concluded, which will be in approxi- mately two weeks. No de- finite plans have been re- leased as yet, but in all probability competition will be in each of the four different leagues, "AA,” "A", Industrial, and the girls. Since there are only three teams competing in the unlimited bracket, it might be a good idea to invite the Las Animas cagers over. Chances are great that they will walk off with the title, but it would certainly add color to the tournament. ATHLETIC FIGURE. . . This week: Walnut Grove’s George KAWAMURA. . .While still wearing short pants broke into the baseball world as a bat boy for the Walnut Grove nine, and ever since his grammar school day he has been performing for the Delta diamond demons . George graduated from the Courtland high school in '35, where he gained fame as an all-around athlete. George, in four seasons of basketball, cracked the varsity scoring record dur- ing his senior year, cavorted on the diamond, and lugged the ball for the varsity gridsters. He later at- tended Sacramento J.C. where he saw plenty of ac- tion for the Jason quintet. George covered the initial sack regularly for the Wal- nut Grove Deltans, winning a berth on the ALL-NCJBL team in 1938. He played for the W.G. Horsehiders in the Merced Assembly Cen- ter and last season was a member of the championship Deltan nine. DUSTERS-YOORES TANGLE TOMORROW’S ATTRACTION The "AA" league leading Dusters quintet will clash with the speedy Yoores in the feature tilt of tomor- row afternoon's triple bill benefit basketball round- up at the high school gym. Couple of girls' league ca- saba tete-a-tete will open the program with the Royal Flusherettes facing the Manjiettes in the initial tussle at one o'clock. And the starry Shooting Stars will cross goals with the Spurs in the second fracas. The entire gate receipts for the afternoon will be contributed to the March of Dimes fund, stated Athletic Director Harry Shironaka. The Yoores have suffered couple of heart-breaking losses in their last two double-A games, which place the classy Dusters in the favored spot. Yosh Nishi- hara's Yoore cagers dropped a wicked two-pointer to the league leaders in the first round and fell one digit shy against the inspired Eight-Ball five last Sun- day. Brush Arai's oval-ringers need this game to clinch the flag and can easily do so if dead-eye Johnny Niiza- wa and Soapy Miyashima hit their stride. But the "fly in the Dusters' ointment" is that bounding ball hawk, the much-publicized Johnny Kashiwabara, who can hit that hoop with touted con- sistency and is expected to give the Aral boys a very tough afternoon. The Royal Flusherettes, led by colorful Hiroko Kashiwabara, should have little trouble with the luck- less Manjiettes. George Fujimitsu’s sextet, after pulling a first game upset, have dropped three straight tilts and are slated to end up in the cellar. With Tom Kashiwabara's flashy Asakawa-Kashiwabara-Nakano combination in action, the Manjiettes are doomed un- less they pull a major upset. In the second tussle the Delta Shooting Stars will take the floor against the Spurs in an effort to protect their second place standing. With Nami Kino- shita and Cowl Takao spear- heading the Stars' attack, Fhu Inaba shouldn't have much to worry about. On the other hand Blackie Imai will "go for broke" on his high scoring Teruko Miyano to knock the Stars for a loop. BRONCOS FACE FLUSHERS IN MONDAY NITE’S DOUBLE BILL The ragged Broncos and the lucky Royal Flushers have suffered, one set-back each, both at the hands of the championship bound Fire- men five, but Monday eve- ning one of them will in- evitably sport two defeats when they meet in the second game of the double header. That both squads will be doing their darndest to take this one to remain in the running for the "A" crown is a certainty for plenty of thrills. This should be attractive enough for the spectators, but in addition, the rough and tumble Slaughterhouse hoop- ers ' will tangle with the hot and cold Screwdrivers in a "bang-up"7:15 curtain- raiser . The Broncos speedy of- fense hit a snag "when fleet- footed Hiromi Sato relocated but Yonomi Ono has filled in nicely at the center post. Still Al Kato’s boys displayed some sloppy ball handling in their last tus- sle, which must be improved if they are to conquer the Flushers. Faced by a herd playing trio--Tom Kashiwa- bara, Shig Sakamoto and Flu Inaba-the Royal Flushers are favored to come out on the long end of the score. In the preliminary the Butcher-boys will be fight- ing for the slim mathema- tical chance to tie the Finance cagers for the In- dustrial flag by taking the Garagemen.
