PIONEER Sports February 12, 1944_____________________________________Page 7 johnnie presents by tsuruta ADIOS, HARRY Athletic Director Harry Shironaka sent in his res- ignation recently. Thereby the recreation department lost a very valuable man. Harry has served over eight months at his post, which included part of softball, and a full season of base ball and basketball. He will be sorely missed by all concerned with sports but, like a good man, our athletic maestro has de- cided to resettle. Harry is relocating to Ordway, Colo., Monday to engage in farming. Lots of luck Har- ry ,and we'll be seeing you. Because Shironaka is leaving, and also due to other complications involved, the proposed basketball tournament will probably be cancelled, announced the athletic department Thurs- day. SHOOTING STARS' NO. 8 The ball gracefully siz- zled thru the netting and the ref's whistle shrilled to indicate two points. And the Sunday crowd grin- ned and then burst into a loud laughter--and wahoo! What's this? No, it can't be. Why the lassie is blushing because she potted the oval for a cute bucket. She' s waving her arms around her head as if to say "I didn't mean to make that basket, it just went in so don't look at me so much.” Maybe it's the reflec- tion from her red shorts but was her face red. And furthermore, off the court, she goes around claiming that she is the only player in the center with a per- fect shooting record.Three out of three for a grand total of six points in ex- actly five tussles. Why, that's more than a point a game. Whoopee! Her name?Well, er er--- anyway, well, she is a member of the Shooting Stars and er,er she proudly dis- plays no. 8 on her blouse. EXPLANATION The Girls' cage league a ll- stars printed last week were chosen by five so-called sports experts on the PIONEER staff, who claim, among other things, to know the cagerettes in- side out. It was done strictly in a personal “se- cret ballot” manner. 8-BALLERS SET FOR DUSTERS; INDUSTRIAL PLAY-OFF SLATED Another Sunday cage triplet will go or display at the high school gym with the "AA" titlists, Dusters, facing the luckless Eight-Ball hoop-men in the feature attraction of the afternoon. In the 1 o'clock curtain-raiser,the Finance casabans and the Slaughter- house "luckies" will clash in the first of the three- game playoff for the In- dustrial flag, while the Zephyr-Firemen net-swisher is slated for the second tussle. The Dusters offense may see a letdown with sharpshooting Johnny Niizawa gone-with-relocation, which may force headman Brush Arai to juggle his line-up. But with all-star Soapy Miyashima heading the parade, Arai lads should go thru the league undefeated. On the other hand the Eight- Ballers will be "go-for- broke" to redeem themselves for the humiliating first- round defeat. If Ping Oda's veterans are able to re- peat the inspired perfor- mance they put up against the Yoores two weeks ago, then the fans can expect a bang-up maplewood tilt. Flag-c o pp in g Firemen quint will be out to pro- tect its undefeated single- A loop record against the floor-burning Zephyr cagers. With high scoring Rusty Uratsu, who relocated re- cently, the Firemen are just another team to make the red-clad Zephyr laddies fa- vorites to come out on top. John Nishimura and George Aoki are expected to score heavily to hand the Firemen their first defeat. First-place playoff for the Industrial title will see the Financiers facing the Slaughterhouse cagers as under dogs, despite money- boys a two league wins over the butchers. This clash should see the Slaughter- house squad coming out with everything they got to take it a lively tussle for the Finance netmen. Finance Pushed Into League Tie The giant killing Hos- pital “Polios” pulled an- another epidemic to grab their second, stunning up- set over the confident Fi- nance q u i nt et Wednesday night, 20 to 13, to throw the bookkeepers into a first place tie with the Slaugh- terhouse five for the In- dustrial crown. Financiers' offense hit a snag when speedy Miki Nagoshi left the game in the second period with a turned ankle and never could overtake the fast-flying hospital boys. Polio Swede Furukawa was the high scor- er with 9 digits. Summary: HOSPITAL (20) Furukawa 9, Ioka 2, Fujisaka 2, Iwa- naga, E. Hashioka 2, Namura 3, H. Hshioka 2,Arishita, Takamatsu.
