February 9, 1944______________PIONEER___________Page 3 1850 MANZANAR TO BE TRANSFERRED SOON Movement of 1850 Man- zanar segregrants to Tule Lake center was officially announced by Ralph Merrit, project director, accord- ing to the Manzanar Free Press. The probable departure date was set to be shortly after Feb. 20. ABC TO SPONSOR VALENTINE DANCE A gala center-wide Val- entine Dance, sponsored by the Amache Boys' CIub, will be held Saturday evening, 7:30 to 11 o'clock, at the high school auditorium. Proceeds derived from this dance will go to the National Foundation Fund for Infantile Paralysis. FREE MOVIES FOR CHILDREN SATURDAY Remember, fellers and girls,the next free movies will be shown on Saturday at Terry Hall, 9 o'clock in the morning and 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The only change is that those possessing orange tickets will be admitted in the morning and blue passes in the afternoon. "Regular Fellers” is scheduled plus several shorts and cartoons. SELECTIVE SERVICE ---continued from page 1--- of pre-induction physical examination through the center Selective Service division. When this is granted Fujiwara will take his physical at Denver, which is the armed services induction station designa- ted by the Selective Ser- vice for this area. Knodel stated that all California registrants re- ceiving: their pre-induction notice should report to the project Selective Service office to file application for “transfer for delivery.” Registrants failing to report for pre-induction physical examination when directed will be declared draft delinquent and subject to fine and imprisonment under the provisions of section 11 of the Selective Service Training and Ser- vice Act of 1940, Knodel warned. Nisei War Hero Sgt. Kuroki Pleads for American Respect SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 4-- Sgt. Ben Kuroki, Japanese American who twice has won the Distinguished Flying Cross, today told the Com- monwealth Club that despite his army uniform and his medals,he was unsure whether or not he was safe on the streets of his own country. “After the widespread publicity given the atro- city stories,"Kuroki said, "I find prejudice once again directed against me, and neither my uniform nor the medals which are visible proof of what I have been through, have been able to stop it." Kuroki said when he joined the army,his fellow soldiers in gunnery school shunned him and his brother. After his training he was sent to England, where he became a Liberator bomber gunner. He also won the Air Medal and four Oak Leaf Clusters. "Under fire, a man's ancestry--what he did before the war or even his present rank-don't matter at all," he said. "You're fighting as a team....You're fight- ing for each other's lives and for your country--you're living and proving democra- cy."
