SPORTS PIONEER January 19, 1944_______________Page 7 johnnie presents by tsuruta PLAYER ELIGIBILITY! The big question before the center cagers today is the status of Zephyrs' Joe Hamaguchi’s eligibility t o play in the rec sponsored league. Principle involved is the understanding that no "outsider" can play in the rec league games. Only of- ficial residents of Amache are eligible to participate. The Broncos' alleged protest rests on their con- tention that Joe Hamaguchi, not having any project of- ficial record of either re- induction or transfer, is an "outsider"and therefore ineligible. And the Zephyrs, on the other hand, contend that Hamaguchi is on a seasonal leave from Gila relocation center and came into Amache from Pueblo to get an in- definite leave. And that he is an "official resi- dent" of Amache until he gets his indefinite leave and departs . Athletic Director harry Shironaka has called a ma- nagers meeting for Friday night at the rec office at 7 o'clock to decide on this matter. We hope the mana- gers' decision will be based on the matter of principle involved and not the teams concerned. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK This time we have three players , who in our opinion, were the top-notch cagers of the week. No . 1. Sharpshooting Chizu Kanda of the Rambler- ettes. Chizu introduced the casaba thru the hoop- skirts for 26 points for the best individual scor- ing performance of the sea- son to date--bar none. This two-dozen-two tallies will no doubt stand for a while, we believe-with our fin- gers crossed. No.2. Next on the honor roll is none other than Tule's pride and joy,John- ny Kashiwabara of the Yoores. Although performing on the losing side Sunday against odds, his aggressive play- ing was the factor that kept the Yoores from be- coming a "ghost" team. In addition, John scored 15 digits to lead, the game's scoring parade. No. 3. And lastly comes tall, tip-in artist James Miyashima of the Dusters. Better known to the local sportsters as "Soapy,"Mi- yashima used his height and smooth under-the-bucket playing to enable the under- dog Duster cagers to pull a close 39-41 upset against the Yoores Sunday. FROM THE SCORE BOOK . ' Looking thru the score- book, we find last Sunday’s Slaughterhouse-Hospital In- dustrial league tangle pro- duced exactly 45 fouls: 44 personals and one techni- cal. This wholesale two score and five rule viola- tions are tops here in the dubious foul-making circle. It was like seeing a football a n d basketball games at the same time for the price of one. Yep, it sure was a sight! DUSTERS-LAS ANIMAS VIE IN "RUBBER” GAME TONITE Brush Arai' s Dusters will meet the oft-invading Las Animas cagers in the "feature" tussle of this evening's three-story cage program. This will be the "rubber" match since the Las Animas copped the first tilt by a close margin, while the Araians made it one-all in their second encounter. Duster five bolstered by the addition of smooth- working Soapy Miyashima are favored to come out on the long end. While the invaders have been greatly weakened by the absence of their sharpshooting Nob Kuwatani, who is now attend- ing Greeley State. Most likely the Las Ani- mas cagers will "shoot the works” on Elmo Sakai and Ted Maruyama to pull them thru. Idle last week with a second round bye the Lil’ Abners of the "A" league will hit the hardwood again tonight against the Mus- tang in a winless match. The luckless Mustangs have suffered two straight set- backs, while the Abners cagers were easy victims of the speedy Broncos in their initial start. Paced by lanky Frank Komatsubara and Jim Otsuka, the latter five will take the floor as a slight favorite. The rugged "Butcher Boys" and the Screwdrivers will clash in the opening tussle at 7:15 o'clock. Both squads have 1-1 record in the In- dustrial league standing, which should make this an- other rough-and-tumble fracas. FIREMEN ANSWER “ALARM” TO TRY FOR THIRD WIN; GIRLS TILT SET The high-flying Fire Department casabans will set the nozzle for their third straight in the single-A circuit when they face the rugged Hurricaners tomorrow evening. Rusty Uratsu, who holds the individual scor- ing record in the "A"brac- ket with 18 points, and George Matsui are expected to keep the Firemen's slate unmarred. But don't count the Hurricaners out too soon, with Tomizo Joe and Goro Sasaki heading the parade, they should ' "blow" their foes a tough evening. In the 7:15 o'clock cur- tain-raiser the Manjiette and the Spurs sextets will meet in another lassie fra- cas. The Manjiettes scored a stunning upset in their league opener but were no match for the Shooting Stars last Sunday, while the Spurs have yet to win a league game. SharpsHooting Teru- ko Miyano will give the Spurs a slip art offensive edge, but surest prediction is to rate the contest as a toss-up.
