SPORTS PIONEER January 12, 1944________________Page 7 johnnie presents by tsuruta ALTITUDE 26 DIGITS C ool clever-shooting Chizu Kanda,a former high- scoring Starlette cavorter from Alameda,Calif., wear- ing the Ramblerette colors, hit a new high Monday eve- ning in individual scoring performance by dumping in 26 markers. Tanking 12 field goals and cashing in two charity tosses against the highly-rated Royal Flush- erettes, Chizu swept over- board Skookum Ikky Iwana- ga's 23 point record es- tablished couple of weeks ago. She also erased easily girls' high-point mark of 21 set some time ago ay Teruko Miyano of the Spurs. This new record is still 3 points shy of peerless Tosh Shimizu’s 29 markers made last season, but for the local gym Kanda's 26 is the tops. Well, who's next? We're vaitin'. FANCY, EH? The "AA” league opened Sunday with the Eight-Ball and the Yoores clashing in the opening tilt. The most eye-catchinq thing about the whole affair was the basketball the Eight-Ballers (plug) used during the warm-up. They had their casaba polished black with a white circle enclosing a black 8 resembling an eight ball right off the pool table. It was master- minded by Harry Ioka’s (Harioka to you) bright idea. And clad in their all- black suit, the Eight-Ball quintet, in our opinion, is the neatest and smartest outfitted cage crew in the center. (Another plug.) Too bad they lost. Seem like they “scratched” every time they “pocketed” the o oval. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK From week to week--if we stay that long--we shall choose the outstanding player of the week. This is the first ''picking" of the season and it seems the lassies have the nod. Guess, it's ladies before gentlemen. On this week's honor --continued on page 8- A NEW SPORTTRAILER… DEAR SPORTS FANS: Well, as you all have noticed, Jim Otsuki took over sports duties as of last week. Over half a year ago, due to man-power shortage, we took over temporarily. Only for a little while, our "boss" said. Grrrr! At last good ole Jimmie came to your rescue. What a relief! Now, we’re just a plain cub reporter running our “beat.” But take it easy, you aren't rid of us yet, 'cause we promised Jim to write a column once a week till further notice. Until then, we'll be appearing weekly. Well, guess that's all for this time. Jim is a good man so we're sure he will produce a very interesting sports section for ye fans. Sincerely, JOHNNIE PRESENTS THREE TILTS ON TAP TONITE: 8-BALL, PIRATES TO CLASH In the main event of tonight's triple-header, the Eight-Ball cagers will face the invading Granada Pirates at the local high school gym. Dropping a heart-breaking fracas at the hands of the Yoores Sunday, the Eight Ballers will face an equally formid- able quintet in the Pirates, who already hold a close one-point decision over Brush Arai's Dusters. The Granadans, rated as one of the top aggregations in this section for many sea- sons, have another strong five led by Rice, Silva and Tyner, and it promises to be a high-searing thrill- ler. Opening the evening's casaba menu will be another girls league tile, the Spurs versus the Toppers, slated at 7 o'clock. High- scoring Teruko Miyano, who was throttled ia the open- ing league against the Ramblerebtes, is ex- pected to lead the Spurs' come-back scoring attack, while the Toppers will be counting on Sadayo Washino, Jane Nagai and the Kochi sisters. Although both sextets dropped their lea- gue openers, the Spurs hold a practice game verdict over the Toppers and will enter the fracas as slight favorites. The second tilt will pit together the Royal Flashers and the Fire De- partment i n a single -A circuit clash. The Flushers, one of the chief "A" crown contenders, paced by a couple of floor-burning forwards in Tom Kashiwabara and Flu Inaba, along with center Shig Sakamoto, are rated as favorites. But don't count the Firemen out too soon for with ver- satile Rusty Uratsu in the line-up, they're no push- over for any aspiring quintet. HURRICANES TO FACE MUSTANGS INDUSTRIALS TANGLE IN OPENER The rough and tumble Hurricane quintet will at- tempt to blow over the Mus- tangs in the second round of the single-A league Thursday evening at the high school gym.The Hurricanes, who dropped their opening tussle to the Royal Flushers by a narrow margin, led by Tomizo Joe, Sam Nogawa and Goro Sasaki will be out to break into the win column. The up and coming Mustangs lost a close one in their opener too, and will enter the fracas as the underdogs.
