Page 12__________________PIONEER Christmas EDITION__________December 24, 1943 HI SCHOOL oOo ===SPORT NEWS=== Last Friday night during the final hectic minutes of the varsity tilt between the visiting Granada Bob- cats and the Amache Indians, the local cage fans acted in a very unsportsmanlike manner. The score was close and the fans, naturally, were on edge with every toss of the ball. And the officials left much to be desired. But all this was no excuse to take it "out" on the opposing players-- our guests. The play in question was the howling and yelling by the fans to distract the Bobcat cager while he was attempting to convert a pair of free throws. The fans' disapproval or dis- agreement with the play as called by one of the office- ials not withstanding--th e Granada player was entitled to a fair play. Yes, Amache won the game but it also “won" an embit- tered rival. Let us have more care about sportsman- ship lest our school’s well prepared athletic program end up "in the rocks." -HS- Amache hi rooting section of about 60 is a poor show- ing for a school boasting 700 students. Wake up, students, and give your teams your full support. -HS- Latest information to trickle into our ears is that the members of the high school band were re- quired to pay admission fee to play at the interscholas- tic games, (perhaps they lacked activity cards.) Gosh, "tooting" your own horn isn't so c h e a p after all. -HS- It has been brought to our attention that the Ama- che high school rooting section has been extremely "tight” about giving visit- ing teams courtesy yells. Come to think of it, not one yell was given for the McClave cagers during Tues- day night's games. Let’s show our future visiting teams a little of that famous Amache hospi- tality. It costs so little but means so much. YOKO NAKANO TANKS 17 DIGITS TO LEAD FLUSHERETTE VICTORY In the Sunday afternoon curtain raiser, the flashy Royal Flusherettes easily dumped the newly-organized Manjiettes by a lopsided 36-7 score. Manjiettes were held scoreless in the latter half. Flusheretts' bespectacled Yoko Nakano was outstanding with her 17 tallies, while Katie Taketa scored 4 for the losers. One of the largest crowd o f the season saw the Animas quintet lose a heartbreak- ing tilt to the last of the center's AA aggregation. From the opening whistle the game showed promise of being a close contest with both sides playing tight, flawless ball. At the end of the initial quarter the locals had a scant 8-7 lead. With Las Animas frontal attack fading badly in the first half with Bob Kuwatani and Ted Maruyama sporting goose-eggs, big Elmo Sakai had to do a "Long Ranger" to keep them in the game. His timely tip-ins and ac- curate shooting accounted for visitors' 10 out of 11 points, while the Yoores' combined efforts gave them a comfortable 17-11 advan- tage . In the third canto the Animas lads thru rejuvenated spirit forged ahead 26 to 22 with Kuwatani and Sakai pumping in under-goal shots. And the game really hit a high pitch in the last stan- za with the lead getting dizzy riding on the see- saw. Kashiwabara opened up with a bucket, followed by Menda’s free-throw conver- sion to bring score up to 25-26 count. But Uyesugi's field goal and Haruyama's only digit of the game gave the visitors a four-point lead. Then Yoores’ Kash came back with two buckets to knot the score and shot ahead on Ito's hook-shot, Animas' Kuwatani tallied again to a 31-all tie. Again Ito came thru with a basket followed by Honda's game-clinching net-swisher. From there on for the last 3½ minutes Yoores"stalled" successfully to protect their four-digit lead t o hand the Las Animas cagers their first defeat in this center.
