December 24, 1943___________PIONEER Christmas EDITION________Page 13 Hi SPORTS by harioka COMPLAINT has been received by this columnist concerning an article that appeared in a previous issue. It all happened after t he Amache-Granada game. A lissome lass stepped up to yours truly and asked me if I was the one who wrote about the high school "pep club." She had me cornered. Naturally, the answer was "yes." Then she pounced on me and objected-“We didn’t like it!” Well, if this classy- lassy will check back to the issue dated Dec. 15, she will find out that no "cracks” were made against the rooters. I was merely "thinking out loud” asking the student body to cooper- ate by giving the yell leaders more support, that's all. Remember, my d e a r, there's always two ways to take things--good way and bad way. How about trying the good way just for me, huh? VARSITY boys of the Amache high will be leaving Monday for a series of basketball tussles around Denver. They are in for stiff com- petition, we know. But re- member, boys, you are making this trip for bas- ketball games only - - or pleasure. Things are dif- ferent today. You are, in a way more or less on a "goodwill mission." There is nothing so democratic athletics. Whatever you do, whatever you say, it will all reflect back on the residents of this center. And to those who have relocated around Den- ver. First of all, we want you to play your best to win but leave a good impres- sion in doing so. Secondly, win or lose, be good sports- men. Bon Voyage, Amache In- dians. Here’s hoping that you'll have a pleasant trip and wishing you all the luck in the world. a MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS, if you read this far, you deserve it. INDIANS SCALP 2 MORE GRANDA HI & McCLAVE CARDS “BITE THE DUST” Visiting McClave high Cardinals and the local Indian varsity five put on a dull, listless four-quar- ters of basketball tussle that saw the Hoke boys stagger home to 26-18 vic- tory Tuesday night at the high school gymnasium. For the first time this season the Indians had to start out definitely on the de- fensive and found themselves first-quarter shortenders on 6 to 3 count. From midway of second canto Amache's "golden boys" began to click and managed to forge ahead of the tal- ler Cardinals. But they were clicking in the well known one-cylinder spray engine manner; that is, every time it fired the momentum had to carry the wheel for several rounds At half-time the score stood 13-9 in Indians’ favor. Second half was a slam- bang affair with both teams matching bucket for bucket. In the last few minutes Amache quintet pulled away by snaring three consecu- tive goals to clinch their third triumph. Amache junior cag- ers looks to be about the ‘best" in this neck of the basketball woods. Shiro Kawamura led the attack for the home five by chalking up 9 points. Hard fighting Granada Bobcats coon within a bucket of toppling the oven-con- fident Amache Indians Fri- day night as they overcame a wise first-half deficit only to go down to a close 27-26 defeat at the local gym. Indian varsity was holding a 17 to 9 edge at half-time. The tide began to turn in the third canto with Bobcat’s Fitch at the cen- ter slot finding his shoot- eye, while his team- mates were holding the home cagers to one field goal. But the Indians were still leading 19-17. In the final stanza the game turned into a frenzy of free-for-all with both teams fighting wildly up and down the court with the score closer than a toupee on a bald head. And the Indians were floundering while the revived Bobcats were clawing hard for vic- tory. Home quintet managed to stave off Granada threat and desperately clung to their lone-point lead to be “saved by the bell.” Amache’s Kajioka pulled the home five out of the fire with his all-around last quarter play.
